PASTOR’S POST.  PEOPLE OF THE RESURRECTION

When British journalist, social commentator and convert to Catholicism, Malcolm Muggeridge, was nearing his own death, he wrote about how comforting Jesus’ words “I am the Resurrection” were. He referred to these words as an “outrageous claim”, not because he didn’t believe them, but he was indicating that to people who knew nothing of Jesus’ life and message, this concept would sound so incredible and radical.

Most people have no difficulty believing that a good and righteous man named Jesus lived and had a deep and lasting effect on those who heard him.

Similarly, people have no trouble believing that he was wrongly accused and he became a political scapegoat for both the Jews and the Romans, but when it comes to ‘resurrection’, people hesitate and caution themselves against accepting something so confronting.

Is there really something more than the physical existence that we know? If I believe that death is not the end, what difference does this make to the way I live?

They really are words that bring with them an outstanding opportunity and challenge. Generations following on from those who first heard these words have grappled with both their meaning and application. They are words, which if true, have the power to completely change the direction and intentions of a person’s life. They are words that could overturn the values of people who only accept a secular world and crush the ambitions of those who only follow the attraction of material gain.

It was Christ’s own belief in these words, “I am the Resurrection”, that gave him the wisdom and courage to stand before Pilate and survive his trial of humiliation. The words gave him the strength to endure his agonising suffering and death. Yet these words were not simply said to give Jesus courage. They were meant for those who needed what the words offered, not simply a validation of the life and horrible death of Jesus, but that goodness and truth would endure, far beyond the historical Jesus. Today, Easter celebrates, not the ugliness of his suffering and death and what people did to him, but the enduring and compelling power of his life and love, which invites us to forever know ourselves as believers in the one who invited us to be resurrection people. Now is the time to ask the question again.

What difference does it make to the way I live that Jesus was raised from the dead and that we shall do the same? Do you genuinely believe it or are you just hedging your bets?

Fr Peter Dillon. PP.

We congratulate the McAuley family, whose child Madeleine Elizabeth will be baptised in our Parish this week.  Please keep the Baptism family in your prayers as they begin their faith journey.

MASK WEARING

Naturally the rule about mask-wearing does not forbid people from wearing masks but simply does not require them to be worn.  So people are very welcome to keep wearing masks if they choose.  People should not feel the need to explain and apologise for continuing to wear masks and we ask that people respect their choices and needs. The risk of covid has not entirely vanished and there are still vulnerable people in our community and so using hand sanitiser and reasonable social distancing where possible is still highly prudent.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“…He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.”         (Acts 10:38). We can’t give what we don’t have.  Open your heart to receive God’s love, mercy and forgiveness.  Then, show the same to others.  As God’s adopted sons and daughters, we are made in His image and likeness.  As Pope Benedict XVI says, “we are made for greatness.”  Let our lives reflect His light to others.  Pray to live a grateful and generous life.  Strive for greatness!  We are made for more!  We are made for God!

The vision of Stewardship speaks in every aspect of life, inviting everyone to be thankful, generous and accountable for what each has been given.

TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH: The tree of life blossoms again

A teaching from the Law of Moses says it all: "Cursed be the one who hangs from a tree" (Deut. 21:23). The body of such a person was to be buried the same day, or the land would be defiled. Religious leaders sought a verdict of the crucifixion from the Romans for precisely this reason: to quell talk that Jesus was God's chosen. It's also why Jesus' disciples rushed to gain permission to take him down from the cross that same day. Like every kingdom paradox, of course, the "cursed tree" becomes a tree of life for those who believe. Celebrate this hope today! "They put [Jesus] to death by hanging him on a tree." Luke 24:13-35

CHILDREN’S SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10

Families wishing to be involved in our parish sacramental programs should regularly check the weekly newsletter for information updates or they can email our Sacramental Coordinator, Cathy Anderson, at andersoncm@bne.catholic.net.au

BAPTISM for Children in Surfers Paradise

Baptism is the first of three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Surfers Paradise Parish follows the policies of the Archdiocese of Brisbane as it welcomes each person into the family of the Church through the waters of Baptism.

Infants and children are baptised at the request of parents. Within the Baptism ritual, parents promise to accept the responsibility of training their children in the practice of the faith and to raise their children to understand and live God’s commandments. Parents can request baptism for their child by filling out an enrolment form, available on our parish website www.surfersparadiseparish.com.au  Once the online baptism form has been received, the Parish Office will email details for preparation for the Sacrament of Baptism and confirm the online booking.

Three primary school-age children are currently preparing for Baptism. Although their personal stories vary, each of the children has asked their parents to organise their initiation into our Catholic Faith. Each child has asked to develop their relationship with God by learning more about God’s love and forgiveness. Their parents are delighted to be in a position to support their children as they start this journey. For our part, may we keep these children and their families in our prayers, especially throughout the upcoming Easter Season?

Sacrament of PENANCE - Reconciliation 2022

Two weeks ago, we celebrated the Sacrament of Penance with sixty children, their parents, family members, Fr Warren, Fr John, Fr Stephen and our Parish Priest, Fr Peter - Thank you to all. Each priest commented that they found the children to be well prepared to open their hearts to God’s love and forgiveness. The Holy Spirit was truly among us and the sense of blessing and grace was a gift shared by each person present. Proudly holding their certificates in the picture below are: Ivy, Maeve, Zara and Lucinda

If you missed this opportunity for your child to celebrate their First Reconciliation, we hope to be able to offer another opportunity later this year - Date to be confirmed through this newsletter.

Liturgy for you at Home (by SPCP) - https:- soundcloud.com/user-633212303/tracks

At Easter, Our Lord's resurrection sends out the most wonderful message to the world.   To people who are struggling.., and those who feel hopeless. ….and also those who feel they will never be good enough, or worthy enough… and those who fear they can never be forgiven… For today's feast says… YES>>>>

The love and dignity that God intends for each and every one of his beloved sons and daughters,  this dignity,  this love,  this life never ends.  Our value and the worth of every person cannot be destroyed or defeated even by the worst that others wrongdoing or lack of reverence can wreak.  And the harm that people can do in this world is enormous. But, God's last and final right of reply, speaks much louder than that! Our Lord's Resurrection sends a message to all the world, that all who suffer, matter greatly to the Lord, and God will not forget them nor fail (later if not sooner) to give them and restore to them the dignity that the world so often denies them.  Hatred, violence, failure to give people the dignity and care they need…  these things will not prevail over Our God of faithfulness and justice. Jesus has definitively and permanently "thrown in his lot" with us … and promises to bring him through to where he has gone ahead of us. Meanwhile, we are made bold in our determination to stand up for those who suffer and who call out for respect and to do everything possible to give practical help and care to those in need. Christ shows us they are worth every effort. And this effort will ultimately not be in vain, no matter what the obstacles.

God is with us, God will never abandon us… God truly is at work renewing us,  restoring us,  vindicating those who have been mistreated ...and giving us new hope .. new life… and indescribable mercy….

- Jesus is an unequivocal "yes" — the enormous and seemingly thankless and much-derided cost of self-sacrifice and service, love, compassion, mercy, gentleness, and generosity of spirit… of thinking more of others and less of ourselves… is all worth it.

May God bless us and renew us in his astounding love… and ever-abiding faithfulness… and eternal care… and may our lives be more and more marked by these wonderful qualities marked by the life, death, and resurrection of Christ ....  with every new day…..

INSPIRING QUOTES OF (or about) THE SAINTS: Meditating with the saints during Holy Week.

  • St Anselm of Canterbury (1033/34—April 21, 1109). The Father of Scholasticism.

    •  “Remove grace, and you have nothing to be saved. Remove free will and you have nothing that could be saved.”

    •  “God does not delay to hear our prayers because He has no mind to give; but that, by enlarging our desires, He may give us the most.”

    • “Spare me through your mercy, do not punish me through your justice.”

    • “I believe in order that I may understand.”

    • “For I do not seek to understand in order to believe, but I believe in order to understand. For I believe this: unless I believe, I will not understand.”

    • “It is impossible to save one's soul without devotion to Mary and without her protection.”

    • “God was conceived of a most-pure Virgin ... it was fitting that the virgin should be radiant with a purity so great that a greater purity cannot be conceived.”

    • “O supreme and unapproachable light! O whole and blessed truth, how far art thou from me, who am so near to thee! How far removed art thou from my vision, though I am so near to thine! Everywhere thou art wholly present, and I see thee not. In thee, I move, and in thee, I have my being, and I cannot come to thee. Thou art within me, and about me, and I feel thee not.”

    • “God is that, the greater than which cannot be conceived.”

    • “A Prayer of Anselm My God, I pray that I may know you and love you and that I may rejoice in you. And if I may not do so fully in this life let me go steadily on to the day when I come to that fullness . . . Let me receive That which you promised through your truth, that my joy may be full.”

    • “I have written the little work that follows . . . in the role of one who strives to raise his mind to the contemplation of God and one who seeks to understand what he believes.”

    • “A single Mass offered for oneself during life may be worth more than a thousand celebrated for the same intention after death.”

    • “God often works more by the life of the illiterate seeking the things that are God's, than by the ability of the learned seeking the things that are their own.”

POPE FRANCIS:

Full text of Pope Francis’ consecration (conducted by Pope Francis on the feast of the Annunciation and prayed in union with him around the world).

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY

O Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, in this time of trial we turn to you.  As our Mother, you love us and know us: no concern of our hearts is hidden from you.  Mother of mercy, how often we have experienced your watchful care and your peaceful presence!  You never cease to guide us to Jesus, the Prince of Peace.

Yet we have strayed from that path of peace.  We have forgotten the lesson learned from the tragedies of the last century, the sacrifice of the millions who fell in two world wars.  We have disregarded the commitments we made as a community of nations.  We have betrayed peoples’ dreams of peace and the hopes of the young.  We grew sick with greed, we thought only of our own nations and their interests, we grew indifferent and caught up in our selfish needs and concerns.  We chose to ignore God, to be satisfied with our illusions, to grow arrogant and aggressive, suppress innocent lives and stockpile weapons.  We stopped being our neighbour’s keepers and stewards of our common home.  We have ravaged the garden of the earth with war and by our sins, we have broken the heart of our heavenly Father, who desires us to be brothers and sisters.  We grew indifferent to everyone and everything except ourselves.  Now with shame we cry out: Forgive us, Lord!

Holy Mother, amid the misery of our sinfulness, amid our struggles and weaknesses, amid the mystery of iniquity that is evil and war, you remind us that God never abandons us, but continues to look upon us with love, ever ready to forgive us and raise us up to new life.  He has given you to us and made your Immaculate Heart a refuge for the Church and for all humanity.  By God’s gracious will, you are ever with us; even in the most troubled moments of our history, you are there to guide us with tender love.

We now turn to you and knock at the door of your heart.  We are your beloved children.  In every age you make yourself known to us, calling us to conversion.  At this dark hour, help us and grant us your comfort.  Say to us once more: “Am I not here, I who am your Mother?”  You are able to untie the knots of our hearts and of our times.  In you, we place our trust.  We are confident that, especially in moments of trial, you will not be deaf to our supplication and will come to our aid.

That is what you did at Cana in Galilee when you interceded with Jesus and he worked the first of his signs.  To preserve the joy of the wedding feast, you said to him: “They have no wine” (Jn 2:3).  Now, O Mother, repeat those words and that prayer, for in our own day we have run out of the wine of hope, joy has fled, the fraternity has faded.  We have forgotten our humanity and squandered the gift of peace.  We opened our hearts to violence and destructiveness.  How greatly we need your maternal help!

Therefore, O Mother, hear our prayer.

Star of the Sea, do not let us be shipwrecked in the tempest of war.

Ark of the New Covenant, inspire projects and paths of reconciliation.

Queen of Heaven, restore God’s peace to the world.

Eliminate hatred and the thirst for revenge, and teach us forgiveness.

Free us from war, and protect our world from the menace of nuclear weapons.

Queen of the Rosary, make us realize our need to pray and to love.

Queen of the Human Family, show people the path of fraternity.

Queen of Peace, obtain peace for our world.

O Mother, may your sorrowful plea stir our hardened hearts.  May the tears you shed for us make this valley parched by our hatred blossom anew.  Amid the thunder of weapons, may your prayer turn our thoughts to peace.  May your maternal touch soothe those who suffer and flee from the rain of bombs.  May your motherly embrace comfort those forced to leave their homes and their native land.  May your Sorrowful Heart move us to compassion and inspire us to open our doors and to care for our brothers and sisters who are injured and cast aside.

Holy Mother of God, as you stood beneath the cross, Jesus, seeing the disciple at your side, said: “Behold your son” (Jn 19:26).  In this way, he entrusted each of us to you.  To the disciple, and to each of us, he said: “Behold, your Mother” (v. 27).  Mother Mary, we now desire to welcome you into our lives and our history.  At this hour, weary and distraught humanity stands with you beneath the cross, needing to entrust itself to you and, through you, to consecrate itself to Christ.  The people of Ukraine and Russia, who venerate you with great love, now turn to you, even as your heart beats with compassion for them and for all those peoples decimated by war, hunger, injustice and poverty.

Therefore, Mother of God and our Mother, to your Immaculate Heart we solemnly entrust and consecrate ourselves, the Church and all humanity, especially Russia and Ukraine.  Accept this act that we carry out with confidence and love.  Grant that war may end and peace spread throughout the world.  The “Fiat” that arose from your heart opened the doors of history to the Prince of Peace.  We trust that, through your heart, peace will dawn once more.  To you, we consecrate the future of the whole human family, the needs and expectations of every people, the anxieties and hopes of the world.

Through your intercession, may God’s mercy be poured out on the earth and the gentle rhythm of peace return to mark our days.  Our Lady of the “Fiat”, on whom the Holy Spirit descended, restore among us the harmony that comes from God.  May you, our “living fountain of hope”, water the dryness of our hearts.  In your womb Jesus took flesh; help us to foster the growth of communion.  You once trod the streets of our world; lead us now on the paths of peace.  Amen.
