PASTOR’S POST.   A Testing Time

My grandmother used to say, when she was in school, that she looked forward to seeing the jacaranda blossoms, because she knew that the holidays were soon to follow. I, on the other hand, get a little twinge of tension when I see them, because it reminded me that my school exams were close. I’m sure mine was an excessive fear of exams, greater than my fellow students, when I would panic unreasonably about not passing exams and having to stay at school into adulthood, but more importantly, having to explain to my mother that I hadn’t passed.

Mum would drag out a wealth of unhelpful sayings when it came to sitting for school exams like: “If you had done your study then there would be no need to worry” or “There’s no point praying for help at this late stage, not even God can help you now”. When did she get to know the mind of God and whatever happened to “I’ll support and love, no matter what the results”. Although I can’t remember ever failing any of my school exams, I certainly don’t have my mother’s less-than-helpful insights to thank.

I’m trying to imagine the look on her face if ever I had suggested a “gap year,” when I might have taken some time out to consider my future options for work or study.  In the 70s a “gap year'' was called a waste of time, when I could have been earning money or getting ready for the next lot of exams at some tertiary institution.

I do have great compassion for those high school students who, at this time of the year, are preparing to face the world beyond classrooms and uniforms. These anxious last few weeks before what they call “freedom,” are bursting with anticipation. If only they knew they were living in the freest community they will experience for years to come. They will soon be living in a world of taxes and licences, of long working hours and complex workplace regulations, of demanding bosses who don’t give you time-out for misbehaviour, but more likely letters of unsatisfactory work performance and termination papers.

Although they won’t appreciate it for some time, their present school environment of a variety of academic subjects, of sporting and artistic pursuits, of gifted teachers opening up for them a huge range of exciting information, has set them up for great adventures in the coming years. The minutiae of teenage life will hopefully evolve into new energies for tertiary courses or apprenticeships, for employment or world travel, for theatre, art and music. While I envy their options, I don’t wish for the heavy demands of trying to manage the massive expectations or range of choices open to them. Each time they take on a new venture, they must reject a myriad of other attractive choices. A momentary pleasure could result in a missed important opportunity down the track. While they may have the energy to try everything and have it all now, they certainly won’t have the time, and in most cases the money. It’s a fast merry-go-round to slow down or get off once it starts. If only they knew that the real tests are still ahead.

WARNING - WARNING - WARNING -

A scam has been going around where emails purporting to be from Fr Peter or Fr Paul (or other priests etc) are asking parishioners to help them in a difficult situation - the message claims that they cannot be contacted as they are “just about to go into a meeting”  but could the person reply by email.  The scammer then gives story that the priest is trying to help a friend in financial difficulty -  and the object is to get money or gift cards bought.  this is absolutely a scam.  The priests and staff of the parish and the archdiocese would never solicit money in that way.  Please do not respond or cooperate with any such requests.  Please let others know who might be likely to be affected. We do not ask people for money for personal matters and our parish official collections are conducted through proper channels.

LIFTING CHAIR FOR SALE - Adjust electric lift chair

My name is Martin, and I am trying to help my 99-year-old grandad recoup some money that he spent on an electric lift chair (which is brand new) that he can no longer use and I'm hoping you or someone in your organisation/community might be interested in buying it. This new, super comfy Avante brand Studio Adjust electric lift and massage chair was purchased by my grandad in February this year - 2022, for $1,899 from a retailer in Tweed Heads. However, due to floods/COVID, it was only recently delivered to him - BUT sadly, my 99yr old grandad can no longer use it, and the retailer will not refund, so I'm trying to recoup some costs for him by selling the chair, to help with other medical bills. The fabric has had Scotchgard professionally applied in the store. The colour is called ‘wheat’ which can go with any interior decor. The chair has a dual motor lift and reclining action with a 6-motor vibration unit for massage. It includes remote controls (still in plastic), a user manual, receipts of purchase and 3x removal fabric pieces to help protect the fabric on the arm and headrest.

I'm happy to negotiate a price for those who are genuinely interested - however, full disclosure, I've also currently got it advertised on the Facebook marketplace for $1499.

If you are looking for a chair like this, don’t overpay in-store and wait months for one to be delivered, you can buy this new chair and use it straight away - and also know that you are financially helping a 99yr old pensioner. If you want to talk to my grandad to confirm this story check out, I'm more than happy to introduce you to him - although he is living at Mountain View Retirement Village in Murwillumbah. Pickup from the Robina location - or I can deliver within the Gold Coast area for a small extra fee.

If you or someone you know are interested or would like more photos/information, please feel free to reply to this email or call me directly on 0421874020.  Kind Regards - Martin Palac. Mob: 0421 874 020.

HOSPITAL CALLS - AROUND THE DEANERY -

HELP THE PRIESTS OF THE DEANERY RESPOND TO URGENT CALLS EFFECTIVELY BY CALLING THE FOLLOWING PARISHES FIRST TO THE RESPOND TO NEEDS WITHIN THE HOSPITALS LISTED.

To efficiently deal with the pastoral needs around the Catholic Parishes of the Gold Coast, the parishes within this Deanery have the practice of having the first call for emergencies going to the priests of the parish where the hospital is located.   Here is a helpful guide to the hospitals and their attendant priests. A nursing home call also follows this procedure, where the first priest to call is a priest from the parish within which the Nursing Home is located.

Becoming Catholic!

A Journey of Faith

Are you interested in becoming Catholic or learning about the Catholic faith?   Welcome!

The Catholic Church’s mission is to offer people of all ages and backgrounds the opportunity to deepen their understanding and relationship with Jesus Christ. Becoming Catholic involves a journey of faith accompanied by the support of a parish community.  This process is called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).  During the RCIA process, you meet with others to share, reflect, pray and learn more about the Catholic faith.  Ceremonies or ‘rites’ at each stage signify the steps along the way. If you or someone you know would like to know more about becoming Catholic or starting to become Catholic as an adult, please contact -

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION -

“…Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us.”                          2 THESSALONIANS 3:9. Most people who live a grateful and generous lifestyle don’t go around bragging about it. But through their words and actions, others do take notice. They notice because of the joy and peace that results, and others desire this in their lives. Know that how you live your life may be the only interaction others may have with your Catholic faith. The vision of Stewardship speaks in every aspect of life, inviting everyone to be thankful, generous and accountable for what each has been given.

TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH - Apocalypse soon?

The approaching end of the church year brings a cascade of dreadful-sounding biblical images in many of the scripture readings. Should we be packing our bags for a mad dash to the end times? As Malachi says, "Lo, the day is coming"—and of course it is. Time forecloses both personally and cosmically. This is why we're regularly reminded to stay "sober and alert," "awake," and "watchful." The threats are real: climate change, global disease, catastrophes, and random violence, not to mention the genetic time bomb that is our bodies. Live each day with purpose. Meet each moment with love. "There will be powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues from place to place, and awesome sights and mighty signs." Luke 21:5-19.  SIGN UP FOR "TAKE FIVE" DAILY ww.takefiveforfaith.com/subscribe

Sacrament of BAPTISM for Children in Surfers Paradise

Baptism is the first of three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Surfers Paradise Parish follows the policies of the Archdiocese of Brisbane as it welcomes each person into the family of the Church through the waters of Baptism.

Infants and children are baptised at the request of their parents. Within the Baptism ritual, parents promise to accept the responsibility of training their children in the practice of the faith and to raise their children to understand and live God’s commandments. Parents can request Baptism for their child by filling out an enrolment form, available on our Surfers Paradise Parish website www.surfersparadiseparish.com.au

Once the online baptism form has been received, the Parish Office will email details for preparation for the Sacrament of Baptism and to confirm the online booking.

Sacrament of CONFIRMATION - 20 October, 2023

We have received word from the Archdiocese of Brisbane Episopal Offices so we can now confirm the date for the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation for the Surfers Paradise Parish will be on the evening of 20 October 2023.

Within the Archdiocese of Brisbane, Confirmation is the second sacrament that children are invited to receive. Confirmation completes Baptism.

For the celebration of Confirmation in 2023, parents of children in Year 3 or older are invited to enrol their children in the continuing Sacramental Journey (Confirmation, Eucharist and then Reconciliation). In our parish, the Sacramental Journey involves preparation and celebration for children and their parents. It requires a small number of meetings and the completion of an At Home Preparation Program led by the parents and supported by the Parish Sacramental Team.

The enrolment form (one form for each child) is available at our website www.surfersparadiseparish.com.au

Once on the website, use the drop down menu under Sacraments to click on Confirmation; scroll down the page to Children’s Sacramental Program Application Form. Eucharist is the sacrament that completes the process of Sacramental Initiation. The Sacrament of Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith. Through this sacrament, the child can fully participate in the Eucharist (also known as the mass) by receiving Holy Communion.

In 2023, children in Year 4 or greater who have previously been enrolled in our Surfers Paradise Parish Sacramental Journey are invited to participate in preparation for their First Holy Communion. THIS WEEKEND’S GOSPEL -  What are you building?

It is what is inside that counts.  That could be one theme that jumps up from this weekend's scriptures.  .Our Lord, who is God made flesh, was born into this world to usher in the Kingdom of God.  He did and said many things in the furtherance of this Kingdom. But each and every action he did was an expression and a consequence of his nature as God and as a concrete exposition of the values of God in action. Our Lord today warns his disciples, yes, the ornaments and workmanship of God's Temple in Jerusalem is superb. But this beauty is merely a shadow of the inner significance of God who lives with his people. Its God within that matters. And in any case, this outer fabric of the Temple will be torn down and destroyed.. but the inner reality of God's abiding presence with his people never ends, no matter what happens.  Amidst the shocks and tragedies around every corner of this uncertain life, if we stay firmly focused upon and connected to the inner reality of Christ, in all things, we will stand strong no matter what happens.

The scene in the gospel is a really shocking one. Some people were admiring the beauty of the superb Temple of God in Jerusalem, only for Jesus to say. There will come a day when not one stone will be left lying on another.

It is unthinkable!!shocking!!

Although the temple was not a mere building. It was God's house. SO, it would be more like admiring the beauty of St Peter's in Rome, and rightly to be quite unable to comprehend or even bring oneself to think of this focal point of our universal faith lying in ruins. What a horrific thought. But, that is how shocking these words were to its listeners. And when the Temple did indeed lie in ruins after the Roman Armies destroying it. The people felt utterly lost. It must have been as if the end of the world had come. People still weep at the small part of the Temple wall that has been rebuilt. Endlessly mourning its loss.

The gospel shines its insightful light upon the massive efforts we put into building up a vision only to have it be torn down again by circumstances, whether by natural disasters and accidents, or by the negligence or malice of others.

It is timely to think of things like this, as Our Lord warns us to put our efforts into building up that which lasts forever. That which can never be touched or torn down.

This weekend, Jesus warns his disciples that there are tough, stormy times ahead, not only for him but for all who follow him and in fact for the wider community of the Jewish people in Israel in his time.

But in the midst of this, he still offers hope:-  "Do not be fooled -- the end has not come."

He rightly predicted that there would be wars and natural disasters. many which will shake the foundations of society and frighten many. but he calls us to remain resolute and keep focusing on the gospel.

In all of this, he says. "don't be shaken. Do not be thrown by the tumult around you. Keep on working diligently without hesitation. Keep witnessing to the truth of my message. I will be with you. I will be faithful to you. even if following me causes persecution and even (for some) breakups in ordinary family and social relations."

But again, this is an invitation to think and pray carefully about what we are putting our energies into. what are we building? Because, some buildings, (MOST buildings, are not built to last forever.) and even the ones that are intended to last forever, DON'T!!!

Jesus is not just talking about a physical building. what are we putting all our hopes and dreams and energy into? because there may be a time when exactly that which is the object of all our time, effort and energy, will be knocked down (by a natural disaster, illness, the bad-will of others, and so many other reasons). so Jesus implores us to put our energies and priorities into his Kingdom and its values that can never be torn down. The reason that the early Christians endured such persecution, such horrors, and kept faithful was they KNEW JESUS. They met him, they walked with him. Or they met those who did. So they willingly would go to their deaths for what their Lord stood for.

We will not be left standing unless we connect ourselves to the one true spiritual building that endures forever. Christ. the Foundation stone and fortress. We need to daily deepen our knowledge and love of the person and message of Jesus . to deeply allow Our Lord to immerse us in his heart and mind. . and may we catch on fire with his person and message and values.

And let us reflect often. Open this spiritual question about our priorities and choices.

What are we building??? Are we building something so closely connected to Christ's gospel that it will never be torn down?

INSPIRING QUOTES OF (or about) THE SAINTS:

  • NOVEMBER 12 - M - Saint Josaphat, bishop and martyr

    • St Josaphat (1584-1623):

    • St Josaphat’s favourite devotional exercise was to make prostrations in which the head touches the ground, saying, the Jesus prayer: ‘Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

    • - ‘I am here among you as a shepherd and you ought to know that, please God, I will give my life for the holy union, for the supremacy of Peter and of the Holy Father, his successor.’

  • NOVEMBER 15 - m - Saint Albert the Great, bishop and doctor of the Church

    • SAINT ALBERT THE GREAT- (c. 1200 – 15 November 1280) - (A Saint Who Loved Both Faith and Science).

    •  The greater and more persistent your confidence in God, the more abundantly you will receive all

    • that you ask.

    •  It is by the path of love, which is charity, that God draws near to man, and man to God. But where

    • charity is not found, God cannot dwell. If then, we possess charity, we possess God, for "God is Charity" (1John 4:8)

    • Natural science does not consist in ratifying what others have said, but in seeking the causes of phenomena.

    • I have never gone out to mingle with the world without losing something of myself.

    • Banish, therefore, from thy heart the distractions of earth and turn thine eyes to spiritual joys, that thou mayest learn at last to repose in the light of the contemplation of God.

    • Do there exist many worlds, or is there but a single world? This is one of the noblest and exalted questions in the study of Nature.

    • In this way, if you continue all the time in the way we have described from the beginning, it will become as easy and clear for you to remain in contemplation in your inward and recollected state, as to live in the natural state.

    • Now it must be asked if we can comprehend why comets signify the death of magnates and coming wars, for writers of philosophy say so. The reason is not apparent, since vapour no more rises in a land where a pauper lives than where a rich man resides, whether he be king or someone else.

    • Furthermore, it is evident that a comet has a natural cause not dependent on anything else; so it seems that it has no relation to someone's death or to war. For if it be said that it does relate to war or someone's death, either it does so as a cause or effect or sign.

  • ST MARGARET OF SCOTLAND (c. 1045 – 16 November 1093) -

    • “Cease your tendency to neglect the due observance of the Lord’s day.”

    • “I thank You, Almighty God, for sending me so great a sorrow to purify me from my sins.”

    • “After receiving Holy Viaticum, she was repeating the prayer from the Missal, ‘O Lord Jesus Christ, who by thy death didst give life to the world, deliver me.’ At the words ‘deliver me,’ says her biographer, she took her departure to Christ, the Author of true liberty.”

    • There are two ways to be charitable: the “clean way” and the “messy way.” The “clean way” is to give money or clothing to organizations that serve the poor. The “messy way” is dirtying your own hands in personal service to the poor. Margaret’s outstanding virtue was her love of the poor. Although very generous with material gifts, Margaret also visited the sick and nursed them with her own hands. She and her husband served orphans and the poor on their knees during Advent and Lent. Like Christ, she was charitable the “messy way.” (article about St Margaret from https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-of-the-day/saint-margaret-of-scotland  )

  • ST GERTRUDE the Great(January 6, 1256 – November 17, 1302)

    • “I understand that each time we contemplate with desire and devotion the Host in which is hidden Christ's Eucharistic Body, we increase our merits in heaven and secure special joys to be ours later in the beatific vision of God”

    • “Every time we look at the Blessed Sacrament our place in heaven is raised forever.”

    • “Soften my hard ‘self-opinionatedness’, which time has hardened so exceedingly!”

    • It is a fearful mistake to believe that because our wishes are not accomplished they can do no harm.

    • Property -- the more common it becomes the more holy it becomes.

  • ST ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY – (7 July 1207 - 17 November 1231).

    •  How could I bear a crown of gold when the Lord bears a crown of thorns? And bears it for me!

    •  As in heaven, Your will is punctually performed, so may it be done on earth by all creatures,

    • particularly in me and by me.

    •  We are made loveless by our possessions.

    •  “How could I bear a crown of gold when the Lord bears a crown of thorns? And bears it for me!”

  • NOVEMBER 18 - m - The Dedication of the Basilicas of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Rome, Apostles

    • Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome, built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and Saint Paul's Basilica, built in the nineteenth century, both replaced older buildings erected by Constantine in the fourth century over the tombs of the apostles Peter and Paul. The dedications of these churches have been commemorated together on this day since the twelfth century. As on 29 June, the universal Church joins the Church of Rome in honouring its apostles.

POPE FRANCIS:   Pope Francis decries nuclear war risk in Ukraine Access to the

(By Euronews  with AFP, Reuters  10/2022)

Pope Francis on 25/10/22 criticised the threat of nuclear disaster in Ukraine, and lamented that he sees peace 'trampled' in Europe.

The Pope was speaking at an ecumenical event organised by the Sant’Egidio Community, which involved a prayer for peace at the Colosseum in Rome.

In his address to several thousand people, delivered after various religious groups prayed separately, Francis decried today's "bleak scenario, where, sad to say, the plans of potent world leaders make no allowance for the just aspirations of peoples".

Referring to the possibility of the use of nuclear weapons in Ukraine, the Pope said: "Today, in fact, something we dreaded and hoped never to hear of again is threatened outright: the use of atomic weapons, which even after Hiroshima and Nagasaki continued wrongly to be produced and tested."

Francis also referenced the Cuban missile crisis, recalling how Pope John XXIII delivered a radio message on 25 October 1962, appealing to leaders of the time to bring the world back from the brink.

"Today peace has been gravely violated, assaulted and trampled upon, and this in Europe, on the very continent that in the last century endured the horrors of two world wars," Francis said.

What do Catholics believe happens after death?

The Church believes that a person faces the particular judgment at death. God judges our souls and finds us either able to enter heaven immediately, needing to go through further purification in purgatory or capable of hell because of our refusal to detach ourselves from sin and our unwillingness to repent. At the end of time, there will be a general judgment, at which time our bodies will be resurrected to join our souls in our eternal life, whether that be in heaven or hell.

What happens to us after death is an indication of our own personal, free choice to choose God and the path to holiness or to turn against Him. What happens after death also indicates who our God is—a God of both justice and mercy.

As Christians, we should not fear death, but rather ready ourselves for it, by growing in holiness and striving for eternal life.

ADULT FAITH - The Tribunal of the Catholic Church and its pastoral role in respect of marriage nullity cases - Fr Paul Kelly.

(Tribunal of marriage - continued- Fr Paul Kelly …)

Tribunal

One must also be aware that not all marriages that break down are able to be declared invalid:  Many times, marriages were entered into by both parties who were mature and knew what they were doing and knew what the meaning and obligations of marriage entailed.  Sometimes these marriages could later break down due to the results of human weakness, frailty and sin.  Someone ending their marriage is not (of itself) sufficient argument for invalidity unless the seeds of that behaviour were there in a crucial way before or at the time of the wedding.

Again the church and its members has a duty and right to regard marriage as holy and indissoluble unless clear and significant factors can be shown with “moral certitude” (where the church declares that it is certain beyond any prudent doubts), that something essential was missing.  These essential elements can be missing even in situations where both parties entered into the marriage with the best of intentions and with goodwill and believing they knew what their consent meant,  if it becomes apparent that underneath this,  something was unknowingly missing that was absolutely essential.

It is important that all people involved try their best to avoid generalisations, judgements, rumours, and labels and share what you saw,  witnessed and heard. Vitally important is to give examples to explain the statements you make.  If a statement is made, it is really important  that the assertion is backed up with a practical example of what the person is meaning.

With the help of Vatican Council II and again with Pope Francis,  the process has moved away from legal terms and towards  pastoral terms, and recognised that within this process are all beloved members of God’s family, many of whom have been terribly hurt and want to be heard and treated with respect and gentleness.

One simple example of this is movement away from civil law terms is we don’t use the word plaintiff anymore, which reminds us more or a civil court process, but the person asking for a declaration of nullity is now called the more palatable term: The Applicant.

Pope Francis has been wonderful in emphasising this compassionate pastoral approach and the unified cooperation envisaged by Matrimonal procedures.   In his 2015 Apostolic Letter called “The Gentle Judge, our Lord Jesus”  (the Latin title is “Mitis Iudex Dominus Iesus),  the pope reminded us that “charity and mercy demand that the Church, like a good mother, be near her children who feel themselves estranged from her.”   And so he reformed the process in some important ways, including adding a Briefer Process before the Bishop, for Nullity, in which the Bishop decides the matter as the judge, in a process where both parties agree to it, and where the evidence makes the nullity manifestly clear.  The brief process, with a short timeline,  still collects evidence to support the issue and has the defender of the bond give input. The parties must be informed of the result and have a right of appeal.

SEVENTH ANNIVERSARY OF POPE FRANCIS’ GROUNDBREAKING LETTER - LAUDATO SI’ -  An excerpt from the Pope’s groundbreaking Encyclical.

86. The universe as a whole, in all its manifold relationships, shows forth the inexhaustible riches of God. Saint Thomas Aquinas wisely noted that multiplicity and variety “come from the intention of the first agent” who willed that “what was wanting to one in the representation of the divine goodness might be supplied by another”,[60] inasmuch as God’s goodness “could not be represented fittingly by any one creature”.[61] Hence we need to grasp the variety of things in their multiple relationships.[62] We understand better the importance and meaning of each creature if we contemplate it within the entirety of God’s plan. As the Catechism teaches: “God wills the interdependence of creatures. The sun and the moon, the cedar and the little flower, the eagle and the sparrow: the spectacle of their countless diversities and inequalities tells us that no creature is self-sufficient. Creatures exist only in dependence on each other, to complete each other, in the service of each other”.[63]

87. When we can see God reflected in all that exists, our hearts are moved to praise the Lord for all his creatures and to worship him in union with them. This sentiment finds magnificent expression in the hymn of Saint Francis of Assisi:

Praised be you, my Lord, with all your creatures, especially Sir Brother Sun, who is the day and through whom you give us light. And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour; and bears a likeness of you, Most High. Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful. Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Wind, and through the air, cloudy and serene, and every kind of weather through whom you give sustenance to your creatures. Praised be you, my Lord, through Sister Water, who is very useful and humble and precious and chaste. Praised be you, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you light the night, and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong”.[64]

88. The bishops of Brazil have pointed out that nature as a whole not only manifests God but is also a locus of his presence. The Spirit of life dwells in every living creature and calls us to enter into relationship with him.[65] Discovering this presence leads us to cultivate the “ecological virtues”.[66] This is not to forget that there is an infinite distance between God and the things of this world, which do not possess his fullness. Otherwise, we would not be doing the creatures themselves any good either, for we would be failing to acknowledge their right and proper place. We would end up unduly demanding of them something which they, in their smallness, cannot give us.
