Anointing Mass
Sacred Heart Church - for the 5th September, 10 am. in the Bulletin. Followed by light refreshments at the Hospitality centre. (no 9 am mass that day)
PASTOR’S POST - HAPPY FATHER’S DAY
This weekend, the first Sunday of September, we thank God for all Fathers, for their love, care and generosity. We pray that God grants them joy, health, and strength with their family and friends.
Also, for all fathers who have passed into eternal life. May God give them a permanent place at the heavenly feast, the reward for all their goodness and kindness. Happy Father's Day to all our Dads in the community. May God bless you and grant you peace and joy.
“God our Father, you made everything! And in your wisdom and love, you sustain all things. We give thanks for all Fathers and all father figures; and ask you to bless them. Grant them the wisdom and love always to be good fathers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. Grant that we, their sons and daughters, may honour them always with a spirit of profound respect. We also give thanks for the Fathers who have now gone to their eternal rest. May they be rewarded for their goodness and kindness. Grant this through Christ our Lord.” Amen.

National Child Protection Week:
The Parish of Surfers Paradise and the Archdiocese of Brisbane are committed to the care, well-being and protection of children, young people and people at risk in our community. Mindful of the theme for National Child Protection Week, may we work to build and support safe communities for all people.
National Child Protection Week
The National Child Protection Week campaign runs from 3 - 9 September.
The campaign aims to engage, educate and empower Australians to understand the complexity of child abuse and neglect and work together to prevent it.
This year, the message that ‘Every child in every community needs a fair go’ will be complemented with the theme ‘Where we start matters’.
Where we start our lives, the resources available to us, and the opportunities presented to us make a significant difference in our life outcomes. Of course, where we start isn’t where we finish.
Safeguarding Sunday
The Catholic Church in Australia will also mark Safeguarding Sunday on September 10.
The day seeks to acknowledge the immense damage caused by the abuse, exploitation and neglect of children and vulnerable adults within Catholic contexts. It commits to safeguarding practices and protocols that create and maintain safe environments. It also invites people to pray for those harmed by abuse directly and indirectly.
The Australian Catholic Bishop’s Conference has prepared a series of resources with a theme "Safe and Supported," which will be shared with Dioceses and parishes around Australia soon.
You can find out more about the Church’s work in this area at:
www.catholic.au/s/article/safeguardingsunday2023
The Archdiocese encourages all parishes and ministries to support this year's National Child Protection Week and Safeguarding Sunday campaigns.
The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference and Catholic Religious Australia have published a report updating the Church’s progress
in implementing the relevant recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
On the five-year anniversary of the initial response, the report is part of the Church’s ongoing efforts to be publicly accountable for how it is working to create, maintain and enhance safe environments for children and all people who are at risk.
Following the format of the initial response, the new report lists each relevant Royal Commission recommendation, the response that was given in 2018 and a high-level summary of work undertaken in the five years since.
The presidents of CRA and the Bishops Conference, in the report’s preamble, draw on the words of Pope Francis, who said each member of the Church “is called to assume responsibility for preventing cases of abuse and to work for justice and for healing”.
“It is to this responsibility that we commit the ACBC and CRA anew, and to which we call all Catholics in Australia, as we give this account of actions taken to implement the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse,” write Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB and Fr Peter Jones OSA in the report.
“It remains our hope and prayer that all that we have done, are doing and will do, may help to bring healing to those so gravely harmed when in the Church’s care.”
Fr. Jones and Archbishop Costelloe note that the past five years have been a period of ongoing listening and learning and a time for developing additional practices, policies and procedures.
The five-year update outlines some key milestones since the 2018 report. It can be downloaded at: https://bit.ly/ACBCCRAFiveYears

CHILDREN’S SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM 2023
In Surfers Paradise Parish, we have 112 children who have recently begun Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. We ask the members of our Parish Family to remember these children and their families in prayer:
May God bless these parents as they continue fulfilling their promises on their children's behalf at baptism. As they approach this sacred task, may the Holy Spirit guide them. Just as the Lord Jesus made the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak, may he once again touch the ears of these children to receive his word and their mouths to proclaim his faith to the praise and glory of God the Father. Amen.

HOSPITAL CALLS - AROUND THE DEANERY -
HELP THE PRIESTS OF THE DEANERY RESPOND TO URGENT CALLS EFFECTIVELY BY CALLING THE FOLLOWING PARISHES' FIRST RESPONDERS TO NEEDS WITHIN THE HOSPITALS LISTED.
To efficiently and speedily deal with the pastoral needs around the Catholic Parishes of the Gold Coast, the parishes within this Deanery have the practice of having the first call for emergencies going to the priests of the parish where the hospital is located. Here is a helpful guide to the hospitals and their attendant priests. A nursing home call also follows this procedure, where the first priest to call is a priest from the parish within which the Nursing Home is located. Please help us service the region effectively and help prevent delays in response by calling the nearest parish.

FATHER’S DAY REFLECTION (FROM MAJELLAN MEDIA)
My daughter gave me a plaque last Father's Day that says, 'Who needs a superhero when you have a dad.' This simple yet touching message encapsulates the often ‘under-recognised’ role that fathers play in the lives of their children and families. As we approach Father's Day this weekend, it's an opportune moment to acknowledge the unique contributions of fathers—be they life lessons, emotional support, or the simple joys of playing with your children in the backyard.
Fathers are often the unsung heroes in the family narrative, providing stability, guidance, and unconditional love. They don many hats—as providers, protectors, mentors, and friends—and we must celebrate these special individuals not just on Father's Day but every day.
Moreover, it's vital for us fathers not to underestimate the impact we have on our children's lives. Our actions, words, and even our simple presence have far-reaching implications that help shape the young minds we are responsible for. Whether it's helping with homework, engaging in a heart-to-heart talk, or just being there during the ups and downs, the role of a father is profoundly significant. We often get lost in the daily grind of work and responsibilities, but remember that our influence extends far beyond the here and now. Our lessons, actions and love will echo in our children's lives and even their children. Whether we know it or not, we are their role models.
However, while we revel in the joy and love of this special occasion, let us also take a moment to remember those who have recently lost their fathers. This day can evoke a mix of emotions—happiness and nostalgia, but also sorrow for those mourning. The absence of a father leaves an irreplaceable void, and we must extend our support and compassion to those for whom this day might be challenging.
This Father's Day, whether you're celebrating or remembering, let us all honour the irreplaceable role that fathers have in our lives and remember that this role carries a responsibility and influence that we should never underestimate. Happy Father's Day. Tony (From Majellan Media)

STEWARDSHIP -
“What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?”-Matthew 16:26
St. Francis of Assisi said, “Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else.”We often forget this stewardship wisdom when we spend our time, talent and treasure to gain more of the world’s riches. We must set our priorities based on God’s values and not the values of the material world. The vision of Stewardship speaks in every aspect of life, inviting everyone to be thankful, generous, and accountable for what each has been given.
TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH - It's a wonderful life
Our days are engulfed in chaos, conflict, and dispiriting news. Then along comes a director like Frank Capra (1897-1991), churning out what have been called "fantasies of goodwill," imposing order with his ragged little messiahs who take meaningful stands against king-sized injustices. A self-described "Christmas Catholic," Capra fought his moral battles on the silver screen. He believed everyone is "essentially good, a living atom of divinity... Films must be made to say these things, to counteract the violence and the meanness, to buy time to demobilise the hatreds." Take your stand. Tell a story of hope.
“Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.” Romans 12:1-2

In Australia, it's Father's Day this weekend...- the first Sunday of September. We give thanks for all Fathers;... for their love, care and generosity... We pray that God grants them joy, health, and strength in their family and friends.
For all fathers who have passed into eternal life.. may God give them a permanent place at the heavenly feast... for all their goodness and kindness...
[“’ gospel’ values included in the readings: the way of God’s Kingdom is the way of the Cross. Allow one’s mind to be transformed by God’s ways, not human ones.”
“Do not model yourselves on the behaviour of the world around you” / “Get behind me……(says the Lord) …. The way you think is the human way, not God’s way!”]
++
“Do not model yourselves on the behaviour of the world around you” Romans 12:1-2
“Get behind me…… The way you think is the human ways, not God’s way!” Matthew 16:21-27
St Peter has just declared that Jesus is the Messiah, the chosen one, and the Son of God. Jesus has rewarded this God-inspired declaration with the statement that Peter is the ROCK…on which he will build his church.
Our Lord’s church is founded on the “rock-solid profession of faith” first uttered by Saint Peter.
But now (astoundingly), only moments later, Jesus is rebuking Peter. Calling him a stumbling block.
Peter has gone from “Rock” to “Stumbling block” in seconds…
How easy it is for us to go from one minute being someone who supports the vision of Jesus to being an unwitting stumbling block or obstacle to the project!! It is very sobering stuff!!
Our Lord’s instinctive reaction, even to one of his closest disciples, makes sense, though. He had been sorely tempted in the desert by the “adversary”…The temptations were persistent, but he deflected them powerfully….. Then, time and time again.. he had to shrug off the “all too subtle temptations” to “sell out” or “take the easy path”…..
If the easy path was not so attractive…. And if the thorny path was not so shocking and awful… there would have been no problem,…. but the right way was something no one would be happy to follow unless necessary…. and the easy path is so reassuring….. Jesus has time and time again fended off the adversary’s temptations…. “Give them bread… give them material things they desire and then they will follow you…..’…. “give them sensations… give them wonders…. and they will follow you….”……. “never challenge them…. given them what they ask without questioning… without moving them forward…… and they will follow you…..”……. “compromise with the world…. reduce your standards……. sell out…. and they will follow you….”…. and now….here is his friend… his devoted disciple…… his rock……. Peter….. saying similar things….. no wonder Jesus shot back that retort like an arrow shot from its bow…….. Jesus has been repeatedly fending off these obstacles to his true mission throughout his ministry… and this would not be the last time each other…
Jesus is saying to Peter and each of us…. “Okay… you know I am the Messiah… the Christ… The Chosen One…. fine!!… But, that is only the beginning. NOW you must listen and learn from me WHAT the true meaning of the messiah really is!”
Peter and the disciples would have grown up with a very different image of the meaning of a “messiah” or the “Christ”…. To them. It was a king… a warrior… in the mould of King David… who would come with revolution and power and cast down the regimes in control, and rule the chosen people in a Kingdom better than the days of Solomon……. God’s kingdom on earth…. and earthly kingdom…. too…. Jesus had to teach them to let go of all that….. he is the messiah but a messiah, like nothing they had expected…. (even though this gentle, peaceful King, this suffering servant, is actually to be found in the ancient scriptures, but the expectation of an overwhelming warrior-king had long ago drowned-out this gentler message). Jesus’ Kingdom is not of this world…… his power is the cross…. his sword is his word, and his weapon is love….. and persuasion… inclusion, forgiveness and justice……
It is interesting, though… Jesus does not speak to Peter like he dismissed Satan in the desert… But there is a big difference here…… In the desert Jesus says to The Adversary… “begone”…. “depart”…….. (The Adversary will never follow God… his pride is too overwhelming)./….. but to Peter.. he says… begone adversary… get behind me ….. its two separate ideas…... Two different things…… to the adversary he says … begone from me…. but to his trustworthy, loyal Peter… he says….. get back behind me… FOLLOW me… learn from me… Don’t try to lead me…. Don’t tell me how to do this…. Become my follower again…. learn the ways of the Messiah from the Messiah and not from your own pre-conceptions. . And of course, Peter does…. He had gotten out of his place and tried to drag Jesus into false visions of his mission… but Jesus would have none of that….… Peter was a quick learner. After this rebuke, he gets back to following Jesus…. Walking behind him, not in front of him (not as an adversary or an obstacle)….
This is very important for all of us.
So often, we might do something for a good motive, but sometimes that motive may be misguided. St Peter MEANT WELL, too. He pulled Jesus aside and said to him, out of the sincerest concern and affection for his master…. NO WAY!!!…. His Lord and Master, the Messiah, simply cannot go off and be executed in Jerusalem. This MUST NOT HAPPEN. Peter loved and respected his master and wanted to protect and preserve his life. He was trying to be a good friend, but he unwittingly was becoming an obstacle to Jesus because Peter did not understand that Jesus’ whole mission was to sacrifice his life for the salvation of all. It was necessary that Our Lord MUST go to Jerusalem and be handed over and sacrificed.
If anything actually MUST NOT HAPPEN, it is that NO ONE MUST be allowed to try to stop our Lord or become an obstacle to his road to Calvary (not even Peter or any of his disciples), Anyone who promotes an easy way out or watering down of the Gospel message, will be nothing but a stumbling block to be gotten around.
It is beneficial always to remember that good intentions are not the be-all and end-all. Sometimes, meaning well can end up defeating the purpose of what we are here for.
Any ‘overly helpful’ disciple can fall into St Peter’s trap of thinking they are helping when they are not really listening and learning God’s ways, unlike the ways of the world. …. We have a task from our Lord to try and comprehend his mission as fully as we can. The “overly helpful” end up doing the exact opposite of what God is trying to achieve. Despite meaning well, it is nevertheless misguided….
We must regularly read the scriptures to prevent this mistake and deepen our spiritual and scriptural reading…. And also, these readings we hear each weekend.. are so rich and full of meaning.. It would be wonderful if we read over the coming weekend’s readings, at least once or twice during the preceding week,… and perhaps just before coming to mass. We even read the texts reflectively again…. Before hearing it proclaimed at Mass… ever to deepen our understanding of the wonderful message and challenge of God’s Word.
Jesus puts the icing on the cake at the end of this Gospel….…. “Anyone who wants to follow me must ‘deny themselves’ ….. Jesus knows that human pride and the human ego are enormous obstacles to his mission…… Jesus wants to teach and guide all his followers into a mindset that leaves behind ego, pride and self-interest…. If we are to be always true to Jesus' message… then we must accept a heavy but liberating truth…. This is not about ME…. this is not about MY needs…. this is about the good news… this is about what is best for others and all……… My comfort… my needs….. my pride…. ,me… me…. me….. it all must be left behind……. So that we can follow where Jesus leads us….and respond generously and compassionately to what happens.
Today’s gospel demands deep and regular prayer, contemplation and reflection so that we can be a rock and not a block… and not only “mean well” but also “achieve well” when we act according to the Lord’s vision.

Saint Teresa of Kolkata
“To keep a lamp burning we have to keep putting oil in it. (Saint Teresa of Kolkata).
There is a beautiful reflection attributed to Saint Teresa of Kolkata, (which was actually written by an American man named Kent M. Keith and published in a 1968 College Pamphlet. However, a framed copy of this reflection was kept on the wall in one of Mother Teresa's Orphanages). It goes like this: "People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centred; forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; be kind anyway. If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you; be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others may destroy overnight; Create anyway. Some may be jealous if you find serenity and happiness; be happy anyway. The good you do today will often be forgotten; do good anyway. Give your best, which may never be enough; give your best anyway.” (Kent M. Keith. "The Paradoxical Commandments: Finding Personal Meaning in a Crazy World." October 25, 2001." (ISBN-10: 1930722052).)
Let us always meet each other with a smile, for the smile is the beginning of love.
"If you ever feel distressed during your day, call upon our Lady, just say this simple prayer: 'Mary, Mother of Jesus, please be a mother to me now.' I must admit, this prayer has never failed me."
SEPTEMBER 8 - The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
This feast originated in Jerusalem about the sixth century, a development of the feast of the dedication of the church of Saint Anne, built in Jerusalem "where Mary was born". Observed in Rome in the seventh century, it was later used to determine the date of Mary's Immaculate Conception. Because of her importance in salvation history, Mary's birthday is celebrated as well as those of her son, Jesus the Lord, and Saint John the Baptist (24 June).
SEPTEMBER 9 - m - Saint Peter Claver, priest
What can we do in the face of injustice and inhumanity? We read and hear about it in the news; we see it play out on our borders and cities. But what can one person do? Peter Claver, a pious seminarian from Spain who volunteered for the Spanish colonies, was deeply troubled by the treatment of slaves brought from Africa to Cartagena. He headed for the wharf when a slave ship entered the port, boarded, and ministered to the desperately ill human cargo who had survived the horrendous journey. He also advocated and petitioned, insisting that human rights be respected. No evil is so great that you cannot be a force to lessen it.

Let us remain with Christ. Let us always try to be one with Him. Let us follow Him. Let us imitate Him in his movement of love, in how He encounters others. Let us go forth. Let us have the audacity to trace new paths for proclaiming the Gospel.
Aug 10 - With sorrow, I heard about the news of the shipwreck involving migrants in the Mediterranean Sea. Let us not remain indifferent to these tragedies and pray for the victims and their families.
Aug 9 - While there is fighting in Ukraine and other places in the world, #WYD showed everyone that another world is possible, a world of brothers and sisters, where the flags of all peoples fly together, without hatred, fear, closure, or weapons!
# all considered WYD in #Lisbon to be a gift of God, who once again set in motion the hearts and the steps of the young people to meet other young people and to encounter Jesus.
Aug 8 - Our outlook changes when we place Jesus at the centre of our lives. And despite all our struggles and difficulties, we feel wrapped in His light, comforted by His Spirit, encouraged by His Word and sustained by His love.
Aug 7 - I am giving people worldwide an appointment to celebrate the Jubilee of Youth together in Rome in 2025. In 2027, #WYD will take place in South Korea, in Seoul. From Europe it will move to the Far East. This is a beautiful sign of the universality of the Church.
Dear young people, God sees how good you are. He knows what he has sown in your hearts. Let it grow. Treasure it with care so that when the inevitable moment of fatigue comes, you can revive the graces of these days. #WYD
Let us #PrayTogether for those who could not come because of armed conflicts and wars. I dream of #peace. I dream of young people praying for peace, living in peace and building a future of peace. Let us place the future of humanity into the hands of Mary, Queen of Peace. #WYD
The first word is to shine. Our God enlightens. He enlightens our faces, he enlightens our hearts, he enlightens our minds, and he enlightens our desire to do something in life.
The second word is to listen. Listen to Jesus because, even with all the goodwill in the world, we embark on paths that seem to be loving but in the end, are forms of selfishness disguising themselves as love. Listen to Jesus because he will tell you what the path of life is.
Don't deceive yourself, my friends. You will become light when you do acts of love. But when you look at yourself like an egotist instead of doing acts of love and going out of yourself, your light will be dimmed.
Lastly, the third word: do not be afraid. Jesus Himself knows each of your hearts. He loves each of your lives. He knows your joys, your sorrows, your successes and failures. And today, on this #WYD, he says to you: do not be afraid, be courageous, do not be afraid.

EXPLORING OUR FAITH -
Jesus:
“I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God…”
God delights in God’s people and sends the Son, so they might be saved and have the fullness of life. The second part of the Creed names and speaks of the ‘human’ God – Jesus, who is both human and divine – here is the mystery of the Incarnation – the Son of God is the Word made flesh, who dwells among us in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus, who saves, is the revelation or sacrament of God’s love, mercy and salvation for all peoples. Within Jesus, everything is contained: God, humanity, creation and salvation. When we pray in Jesus’ name we invoke His saving presence. This is the name given at the incarnation, pronounced at His birth, crucified on the Cross, risen from the dead and reigns for all eternity.
‘Eternally begotten of the Father … the only son of God … God from God… true God from true God….of one being with the Father….begotten not made ….through Him all things were made’ – these phrases speak of Jesus’ divinity.
Many people today consider Jesus a great prophet, miracle worker or wise teacher, but cannot accept the Christian belief that Jesus is both divine and human. Yet Catholic belief coincides with the early Church Councils, which stress that Jesus possessed all the attributes of God – having no beginning or end, the Word of God made flesh in Jesus is ‘responsible’ for the creation and shares the very essence of God.
At the same time, Jesus’ humanity is attested through the narrative of his birth and his life in Palestine 2,000 years ago. Jesus has a particular human history. It was by the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus took flesh in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Mary gave birth to a son, Jesus. Mary said ‘Yes’ to God’s invitation, and through the gift of the Spirit, she gave her assent to becoming Jesus’ mother, the Mother of God. Mary’s faith, itself a gift from God, sets her as a model of faith for all believers, demonstrating that nothing is impossible for God. Mary has a special place in the Catholic tradition as the Mother of Jesus.
Jesus’ suffering, death, resurrection from the dead, ascension into heaven, his reign in glory and the promise of his return reveal the purpose of why God entered human history. Jesus’ life, suffering, death and resurrection were how God showed His love for all humankind and all creation and saved us from our sins as God opened to us the way to live with God in glory. The pattern of Jesus’ life provides a pathway for all believers to follow.
The Incarnation is the central mystery of the Christian faith. It distinguishes Christianity from other religions since it reveals that God, in the fullness of time, sent His Son, born of a woman, to redeem us so that we could be adopted as sons and daughters of God (cf (Galatians 4:4,5) to share in an eternal destiny with our loving God.
