PASTOR’S POST -
A SPECIAL MESSAGE re GRAHAM AND BARBARA BOUSEN OF STELLA MARIS CHURCH.
A huge thank you and congratulations to Barbara and Graham Bousen as they step down from their coordinating duties at Stella Maris Church. They have been excellent and welcoming Stella Maris Morning Mass coordinators for twenty-seven years. What an extraordinary milestone. We thank the Lord for their dedication and devotion to the Lord’s beautiful church. We also pray for Graham as he recovers from surgery and an extended recovery time. And we are delighted that they will remain valued parish community members. A big thank you to Tony and Fiona Graham, who will take over coordination, along with our fantastic team of helpers,
Sincerely, Fr Paul.
Fr Paul Kelly
A MESSAGE FROM GRAHAM AND BARBARA:
Barbara and I both turn 80 next year, and our family has been urging us to spend some time catching up on our bucket list. With 27 years of doing our current Stella Ministry, it is time to step back as Coordinator of the 7.00 a.m. Sunday Mass.
This issue has now been overtaken by a health matter that has arisen for me. I underwent surgery on the 17th of September and it entails an approximate 3-month recovery period. In discussions with Father Paul, it was decided to put changes in place now to minimise disruption for the Stella Ministry.
Thankfully, we can do this readily. I am delighted to let you know that Tony and Fiona Graham have offered to take over the duties immediately, and Father Paul has accepted. I will be available to do reading duties upon my return.
Thank you, as always, for the wonderful work you do for Stella Maris Parishioners. As I have told you before it is amazing the number of visitor comments I receive regarding their enjoyment of our Mass and how they return to join us whenever they are on the Coast,
Best wishes, and may God’s abundant Blessings be with you always.
Graham and Barbara.
JESUS TEACHES HIS DISCIPLES
I was once taught that the only silly question is the one you don’t ask. The disciples (and we can do this, too) did not understand what Jesus was teaching, but it was easier for them to nod and pretend that they understood. Really, they didn’t have a clue.
Jesus has the answers, and Jesus has the vision. We don’t have all the answers, and we as students should feel quite at ease in admitting to God that we don’t yet understand—we don’t get it!. Please, Lord, continue to instruct me. Help me see things the way YOU see them. Show us how much we miss the point by squabbling amongst ourselves about precedence and greatness. Thank you, Lord, for setting the disciples straight (and us too!).
Ambitiousness and self-focus lead to conflict and wrangling, which have nothing to do with the mission of Christ’s gospel… “Get rid of it!” he says.
Jesus gives us the example of a little child with no exalted aims for greatness. Jesus equates himself with the poor and the humble ones of this world. In welcoming them, we welcome him.”

Queensland 4226, on Sundays from 10 am – 12 pm.

NOTE: If you want us to purchase for you (we may save a little postage in bulk), we will need your details by Tuesday next week (23rd July) to ensure that you have the material on time for 28th July.
Around seven years ago, we looked at Unlocking the Mysteries of the Bible. This study program is the complete study version, an In-depth Exploration of Salvation History, which will require considerable pre-reading monthly of various sections of the Bible, and that is why we will do it monthly to ensure we allow ourselves sufficient time to give this Study our full participation. This way, we will get the most from the sessions, and once we see the big picture of the Bible, we will be able to understand Scripture in a whole new way. The Mass readings will make more sense. You will see how our beliefs as Catholics are rooted in Scripture, your prayers will come to life, and you will know how you are part of this remarkable story.
The Bible Timeline® study program takes you on a guided journey through salvation history. Presenter Jeff Cavins shows you how fourteen of the Bible’s narrative books tell the biblical story from beginning to end and gives you the keys to understanding the amazing story woven through Scripture. Using a unique colour-coded chart, you will learn the
Bible's significant people, places, and events and discover how they all come together to reveal the remarkable story of our Faith. Bookings can be made by ringing the Parish Office (new): (07) 5671 7388 (9 am – 2 pm Mon-Fri). We’re excited to be able to present this resource, so please join us.

To efficiently and speedily deal with the pastoral needs around the Catholic parishes of the Gold Coast, the parishes within this Deanery have the practice of having the first call for emergencies go to the priests of the parish where the hospital is located. Here is a helpful guide to the hospitals and their attendant priests. A nursing home call also follows this procedure, where the first priest to call is a priest from the parish within which the Nursing Home is located. GOSPEL THIS WEEKEND - Homily: Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time.Year B - Sunday, 22 September 2024.
Homily: Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time.Year B - Sunday, 22 September 2024
This weekend Our Lord teaches us a most important lesson. He reminds us that following him is the path of unselfish service. Love and sacrifice…. Our Lord also shows us that God's idea of greatness is very different from the ideas of the world… [FHL]
+++++++
I love the system of continuous readings that the Catholic Church and many other denominations in the Christian churches have developed, the lectionary cycle, as it's called. Its true genius is that it allows the Bible to come alive in our yearly journey. The readings this weekend are challenging, but I love that, too.
It would be easier for us to pick the readings we like every week, to pick the texts that most speak to us and expound on them. But if I were to do that, or anyone was to do that, we would be sorely tempted to pass over all those passages that challenge us, move us out of our comfort zone, or are very difficult to understand. Those really important parts are inviting us to be a disciples in the building up of Christ's kingdom and not our watered-down version of it, which I might think the kingdom of God should be, but is not.
Through our journey, through the continuous cycle of readings, we don't choose the text; it chooses us, and it reads our lives. God transforms our lives, reshaping them in God's image, not in our own. So scenes like this weekend's gospel can be really sobering, giving us the impression that the disciples never fully understood what the Lord was trying to teach them. But we have to remember that the gospels essentially are a sneak peek into the formation and training of the disciples they were getting from the moment Jesus started his earthly ministry.
Later, after Jesus' death, resurrection, ascension back to the Father in heaven, and after the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the disciples were transformed and enlightened. They finally understood the message and teaching of Jesus. No longer were they wrangling and jockeying for the best place of honour, no longer were they squabbling over who was the greatest or what part of the work Jesus left for us to complete was their part, and other people's part, or what was the most lucrative part of the ministry.
All these things paled as they understood the full import of Christ's message. We're very fortunate the gospels are not merely the end result of all Jesus' teachings, with all the rough bits polished off. We're very blessed that the gospels show us the journey of understanding and learning and change of vision that the disciples had to go through before they fully comprehended the message of Jesus as far as any human can.
If we only got the final results, we would not understand the journey of discovery, conversion, and challenge they went through, which we too must undergo. We must let go of our old ways of thinking and embrace the new ways of Christ's gospel. These old ways included self-advantage, self-focus, what can I get out of this for myself? And the new ways of the gospel are self-sacrificing service, consideration for others, a mindset that puts oneself last, and being the servant of all.
The first reading reminds us of something we must be very wary of. When we become aware of some challenging aspects of our weaknesses and selfishness, it's sorely tempting to want to shoot the messenger. That's what happened in the Old Testament, and it's alive and well today.
The prophets pointed out how people were not living up to God's ways in what they did and said. Sadly, most people didn't start working straight away on their areas of weakness or blind spots; rather, they typically started trying to discredit the prophets, ignore them, and ridicule their message on many occasions. They killed the prophets rather than deal with the actual problem, their wrongful ways, and their bad attitudes.
Do we ever see that tendency in ourselves in one way or another? We become aware of our weaknesses or areas that need growth or change in our personalities, one that needs work and improvement or complete turning around sometimes. But instead of humbly beginning that work of asking God to be with us, to pour his grace into our hearts and minds, to change these aspects, and to ask God to remove these barriers and end these wrongdoings, we can just fob off the message and blame the messenger.
This would have to be the most unhelpful and dangerous behaviour, especially for a would-be disciple of Christ. In a way, it's a self-defence mechanism, isn't it? That denial and continuing to do what we always do is designed to protect us, but it keeps us stuck in destructive ways and repeating mistakes. It's not being honest or open with ourselves and not admitting our utter dependence on God's mercy, love, and grace.
That grace slowly but surely changes us to be more and more like the disciples he's calling us to be. God loves us despite our sinfulness, but God does not want us stuck in the mud either. God is offering us the grace to rise above our weaknesses if we let him address our sinfulness and bravely trust in him and honestly face the truth of this.
We don't have to try hard to see this behaviour in action. When something challenging makes us look deeper into our inner motives and attitudes, the first reaction can be, no, I disagree with that; no, no, that's not correct; oh, no, that doesn't apply to me. Let's see them for what they are as immediate defence mechanisms that aren't helping us move forward and aren't helping us to truly hear and receive Christ's life-giving message, his truth that looks into our hearts and finds the way forward.
Saint James speaks out very well again, and he spells it out clearly in the second reading. Wherever you find jealousy and ambition, you find disharmony and wicked things of every kind, whereas wisdom from above is essentially about working for peace. It shows itself in kindness, consideration of others, and compassion, and it results in good actions. If we're on the right track, partiality, hypocrisy, endless wranglings, fights, and disruptions would not be present.
In God's eyes, Holiness is being a peacemaker, not a stirrer or agitator for one's desires or ambitions. As James points out in his letter in chapter three, he says it really clearly: We wouldn't have jealousy or wrangling if people had a self-sacrificing, serving, considerate approach to others above themselves. Jesus, of course, is the perfect example of this self-sacrificing love and service.
He could have claimed all authority and every privilege, but instead, he emptied himself completely for others. This is stark, shocking, and challenging. Will we follow in the master's footsteps, or will we continue trying to go in circles of our own? Circles that take us around and around without ever moving forward.

YEAR OF PRAYER - RESOURCE
(Prayer attributed to Saint Padre Pio)
Heavenly Father, I thank you for loving me.
I thank you for sending your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, to the world to save and to set me free. I trust in your power and grace that sustain and restore me.
Loving Father, touch me now with your healing hands,
for I believe that your will is for me to be well in mind, body, soul and spirit.
Cover me with the most precious blood of your Son,
our Lord, Jesus Christ from the top of my head to the soles of my feet.
Cast anything that should not be in me.
Root out any unhealthy and abnormal cells.
Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild and replenish any damaged areas.Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection
by the power of Jesus’ precious blood.
Let the fire of your healing love pass through my entire body
to heal and make new any diseased areas
so that my body will function the way you created it to function.
Touch also my mind and my emotion,
even the deepest recesses of my heart.
Saturate my entire being with your presence,
love, joy and peace and draw me ever closer to you every moment of my life.
And Father, fill me with your Holy Spirit
and empower me to do your works
so that my life will bring glory and honour to your holy name.
I ask this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen.
A VOCATION VIEW:
When Jesus says, “If you wish to rank first, you must remain the last one of all and the servant of all”, many people could immediately turn and walk away. Are you willing to serve as Jesus did? For those who are called, Jesus promises only one thing: the Cross. If one seeks power and prestige in this world, there will be no reward in the Kingdom of Heaven. (Mark 9:30-37)

STEWARDSHIP -
“If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Mark 9:35
Jesus teaches us that we are called to love one another. Love involves sacrifice. Sacrifice is a word that many of us don’t like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, when we sacrifice, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.
The vision of Stewardship speaks in every aspect of life, inviting everyone to be thankful, generous, and accountable for what each has been given.
TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH - Race you to the bottom
“They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest.” Mark 9:30-37 We’re bred for competition. In the ongoing contest for limited resources, we don’t want to be without a chair when the music stops. Pitted against siblings for the finite attention of parents, the competition grows larger as we do. Schools bid us compete for grades and rank. Sports, video games, the car we drive, the job we get, the promotion we achieve, the money in the bank, are contests won or lost on the ladder toward greatness. Jesus says don’t compete; serve. True greatness is a race to the bottom. Count the ways you’re winning.
INSPIRATION FROM THE SAINTS:
Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
“Pray, hope, and don't worry. Worry is useless. God is merciful and will hear your prayer. Have courage and do not fear the assaults of the Devil.” Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
“Whoever does not meditate, is like someone who never looks in the mirror before going out, doesn’t bother to see if he’s tidy, and may go out dirty without knowing it. The person who meditates and turns his mind to God, who is the mirror of his soul, seeks to know his faults, tries to correct them, moderates his impulses, and puts his conscience in order.” Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
“You complain because the same trials are constantly returning. But look here, what have you to fear? Are you afraid of the divine craftsman who wants to perfect His masterpiece in this way? Would you like to come from the hands of such a magnificent Artist as a mere sketch and no more?” Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
“In order to attract us, the Lord grants us many graces that we believe can easily obtain Heaven for us. We do not know, however, that in order to grow, we need hard bread: the cross, humiliation, trials and denials.” Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
“Prayer is the best weapon we have; it is the key to God’s heart. You must speak to Jesus not only with your lips but with your heart. In fact on certain occasions, you should only speak to Him with your heart.” Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
Remember that it is not a feeling of guilt that constitutes sin but the consent to sin. Only free will is capable of good or evil. But when the will sighs under the trial of the tempter and does not will what is presented to it, not only is there no fault, but there is a virtue. Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.
When you gossip about a person it means that you have removed the person from your heart. But be aware, when you remove a man from your heart, Jesus also goes away from your heart with that person. Saint Pio of Pietrelcina.

SEPTEMBER 26 - Saint Cosmas and Saint Damian, martyrs:
Cosmas and Damian were twin brothers born in Syria in the third century. They were also doctors, and they became known as “the holy money-less ones" because they cared for the sick free of charge. The strange practice of accepting no money for medical care was their way of embodying God’s providential love and care for his people. And folks took notice.
The twin brothers were arrested on September 27, during the persecution of Christians by Diocletian in 303. Soon after, the faithful brothers defied death by water, fire and crucifixion before they were finally beheaded in Cilicia, along with their three brothers. They were buried in Cyrrhus, Syria.
Veneration to Cosmas and Damian began immediately. The faithful asked for their intercession, especially in matters of physical illness. St. Gregory of Tours spoke about the twin brothers this way: “These two physicians cured as many people by their prayers as they did by their medical knowledge, and now in heaven they still care for the sick miraculously.”
St. Cosmas and St. Damian are patron saints of pharmacists, physicians, and surgeons. In fine art, they are usually depicted in lined robes, hoods or cylindrical physicians’ hats, carrying surgeons’ bags and instruments. They are represented by a box of ointment and medical emblems.
Saint Vincent de Paul: (SEPTEMBER 27 - Saint Vincent de Paul, priest)
“Humility is nothing more than the truth, and pride is nothing but lying.”
“You will find that Charity is a heavy burden to carry, heavier than the kettle of soup and the full basket. But you will keep your gentleness and your smile. It is not enough to give soup and bread. This the rich can do. You are the servant of the poor, always smiling and good-humoured. They are your masters, terribly sensitive and exacting masters, you will see. And the uglier and the dirtier they will be, the more unjust and insulting, the more love you must give them. It is only for your love alone that the poor will forgive you the bread you give to them.”
“Make it a practice to judge persons and things in the most favourable light at all times and under all circumstances.”
“Go to the poor: you will find God.”
“Charity is certainly greater than any rule. Moreover, all rules must lead to charity.”
“The kingdom of God is peace in the Holy Spirit; He will reign in you if your heart is at peace. So, be at peace, Mademoiselle, and you will honour in a sovereign way the God of peace and love.”
SEPTEMBER 28 - Saint Lawrence Ruiz and Companions, martyrs
Saint Lorenzo (Lawrence) Ruiz (1600-1637), a husband and father, the first saint of the Philippines and the first Filipino martyred for the Christian Faith. He and 15 others were martyred at Nagasaki, Japan in 1637. The group included two consecrated women, two other laymen, two brothers and nine priests.
Lorenzo Ruiz was born in Binondo, Manila, Philippines, to a Chinese Father and a Filipino mother who were both Catholic. Educated by the Dominicans, he was a devoted and active Catholic, a member of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, and a third-order Dominican. He was a husband and father of two sons and a daughter.
In 1636, while working as a clerk for the Church, Lorenzo was falsely accused of murder and forced to leave his country. The Dominican fathers who knew Lorenzo arranged to have him take a ship to Japan. Soon after arriving in Japan, Lorenzo was captured for being Catholic and brought to Nagasaki, where he was tortured. He was promised a safe journey back to his family if he renounced his faith, but he refused. He was tortured for days and finally murdered on September 29, 1637, by a notorious torture tool known as "the pit." Their bodies were crushed while hanging upside down for three days, then they were burned. The ashes were thrown into the Pacific Ocean.
On February 18, 1981, Lorenzo Ruiz became the first person beatified outside the Vatican when Pope St. John Paul II beatified him in the Philippines. He and his companions were canonised on October 18, 1987, in Rome. Saint Lorenzo is the patron saint of the Philippines and the Filipino people.
“When government officials asked, ‘If we grant you life, will you renounce your faith?’ Lorenzo replied: ‘That I will never do, because I am a Christian, and I shall die for God, and for Him. I would give many thousands of lives if I had them. And so, do with me as you please.’”
Saint Wenceslaus, martyr, (SEPTEMBER 28)
“But his deeds I think you know better than I could tell you; for, as is read in his Passion, no one doubts that rising every night from his noble bed, with bare feet and only one chamberlain, he went around to God’s churches and gave alms generously to widows, orphans, those in prison and afflicted by every difficulty, so much so that he was considered, not a prince, but the father of all the wretched.” Chronicler of St Wenceslaus.

Pope Francis’ begins Asia Pacific trip
Before he landed, he spoke to journalists aboard the flight bound for the Indonesian capital
Pope Francis has arrived in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, kicking off the longest and farthest trip of his tenure to the Asia Pacific region.
He is expected to highlight environmental concerns and the importance of interfaith dialogue during the 12 day trip, which will also see him travel to Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Timor-Leste - the only one of the four countries that is predominantly Catholic.
It's a particularly challenging journey for a man who turns 88 in December and has been battling a spate of health issues.
Asia Pacific is one of only a few places in the world where the Catholic Church is growing in terms of baptised faithful and religious vocations.
Parts of the Pope's trip, which was originally scheduled in 2020 but postponed due to the pandemic, will retrace the steps of St John Paul II, who also visited the four nations during his 27-year pontificate.
"Today I begin an Apostolic Journey to several countries in Asia and Oceania," he wrote on X on Monday. "Please pray that this journey may bear fruit."
Since his election in 2013, the Pope has urged the Catholic Church to bring God's comfort "toward the periphery" - referring to communities who are marginalised or far away.
He is only the third pope to visit Indonesia, which has the largest population of Muslims globally.

** The significance of the ancient Catholic Blessing Symbol. “20 C+M+B 24”
An ancient medieval practice that developed in the Catholic Church was to bless one’s home with blessed chalk at the yearly epiphany. On the door or the lintel will be this symbol:
This means that 2000 years ago, after Christ’s birth, Wise Men visited and gave homage to the Lord and were welcomed into the hospitality of the Holy Family’s abode. We dedicate the present year of this century, ‘24, to the protection of the Lord. May the Lord bless this abode.
The letters C+M+B represent Caspar, Bathasar and Melchior, the three Wise Men. CMB is also the initials of the Latin phrase “Christus Mansionem Benedicat” - “May Christ Bless this dwelling place.”
