(EPISODE:503)
+++++++++++++

we are all extremely fortunate that Our Lord summed up all of God's Law and the message of the Prophets in two simple commandments, which are really different sides of the one coin: Love God and love neighbour. [FHL]

+++++

In the Bible, and particularly by the time of our Lord's ministry on earth, there were literally hundreds and hundreds of rules, regulations, practices to be observed for all faithful Jewish people to try and keep as best they can. If anyone wanted to be considered perfect at rights with God, then they were expected by the experts of their day to observe each and every one of the many rules, laws and practices set down. They weren't just the Ten Commandments, but there were also many extra detailed rules and regulations to keep on all sorts of parts of life.

These included requirements related to ritual cleanliness. So we're all extremely fortunate that our Lord summed up all of God's law and all of the message of the prophets in two simple commandments, which are actually different sides of the one coin. Love God, love our neighbour.

Which also means we actually show our love for God by how we show love and concern, care, mercy and compassion for our neighbour, if we found ourselves in the same situation as our neighbour. The complete gospel is this, love of God, complete love of God and love of our neighbour as ourselves. And the common denominator to both parts is, of course, love.

It's the meaning and heart of the gospel of Jesus. Jesus Christ is love. The Father is love.

The Holy Spirit is love. God is love. People who act lovingly to everyone, even those who don't wish us well, or who want to do us wrong.

We act in and through love because we are relating to God, whose very nature is love itself. Our Sunday worship is deeply mysterious and sacramental, and it's an expression of our weekday lives. And our weekday lives must be an application of what we proclaim and express on Sunday.

We all can fall short of our basic beliefs in our ability to walk that path of holiness. We can fall short in moments of stress or trial, and we might at times fail to recognise the holiness of those with whom we meet, with whom we work and live. We can all possibly fall into that trap of not practically applying the principles that we do truly believe and strive to live.

But again, that's what's so beautiful about Jesus' commandment. Love. It's not about driving ourselves with mechanical intensity to treat others like we would treat God, or else we've failed and failed horribly.

It's about loving ourselves, being gentle on us, and gentle on others, and allowing that love and gentleness to flow out to everyone around us. Allowing God to put that love in our hearts and with our cooperation. If we fall short, it is love, not harshness, that is there to put us back on our feet again.

Because the goal is not about grabbing the crown of victory like a ruthless person who grabs the prize because it's owed them. But no, it's about growing into the most loving person we could possibly be, being completely united to God, who is the true source of all love.

+++++
Jesus himself experienced suffering and death, the most terrible of deaths, in union with all who suffer and die, especially those who suffer terribly or unjustly or cruelly, and those who have died unknown, voiceless, and denied the basic human dignity and respect that all God's children without reserve inherently deserve, that is, all people, everyone. Jesus himself experienced bereavement often in his life. His heart was and is all-loving.

He reached out to all who are in pain and still does so to this day. Close to home, his foster father, Saint Joseph, who cared so wonderfully for him on this earth and taught him so many things in his life. Saint Joseph himself died fairly early in our Lord's short earthly life.

And also, Jesus' close friend Lazarus passed away after a brief illness. And Jesus himself witnessed suffering, death, and bereavement daily, many times at proximity. Jairus' daughter, the widow of Nain's only son and protector.

Although Jesus is indeed the Lord of Life and the Lord of the Resurrection, he keenly and compassionately saw and felt the absolute grief of losing a loved one. He felt this himself and he felt it for those around him. In Jesus' own life, he raised only a very few people from the dead, but he raised those few as a sign and foretaste of the hope of the resurrection that awaits absolutely everyone who trusts in his promises.

These rare but powerful signs of resurrection were done with compassion and also to assure us that Jesus is with us in everything and knows all too well the pain and loss. Think of those whom Jesus loved deeply but did not raise from the dead. A prime and glaring example, Jesus did not raise even his foster father Joseph from death, even though he loved and obeyed his earthly foster father in all things.

I suspect that Jesus knew that to raise his stepfather Joseph was not the heavenly Father's will. And Jesus would also not spare himself what others are not spared. Even the loss of a close family member and loved one, but those he did raise from the dead, is a promise to us all and a reminder of the power of Christ's resurrection and faithfulness.

Even Jesus did not avoid suffering and death but faced it with love and graciousness and a saving intention for all. Today reveals God's faithfulness, the eternal nature of love and the fact that our souls are truly eternal and destined for God and to be reunited with all our loved ones who've gone before us. Today we remember all the faithful departed and we also remember today all humans who have lived particularly tragic lives, with lives punctuated by grave difficulties, mistakes, sins and heartbreaking life paths.

For all whose life story did not end well on this side of heaven, we pray for their souls, knowing the infinite hope, mercy and love at the heart of God, who knows and loves every one of us better than we can even realize ourselves. We commend these people and rightly do it with confidence and hope into the God who reminds us that some situations in life seem quite impossible. To humans it might be impossible, but not to God.

As Jesus said himself, to God all things are possible and in this we hope. This day becomes a sign, an enormous sign of hope and promise, even in the face of death. Today's feast reminds us that each human being is precious, so infinitely precious in God's eyes, that Christ died so that everyone should live fully and that no one should be treated as disposable, as not valuable.

"When people die, they are not precious because they are remembered, they are remembered because they are infinitely precious and unique." This is the God who told that wonderful parable of the hundred sheep, one is lost, ninety-nine are safe, but God is not happy with just ninety-nine. God wants the whole one hundred. God keeps searching and looking and longing for that one lost soul. Even though he has ninety-nine percent retention, that's not enough for God. God wants all of his precious ones, safe where they belong.

We indeed praise God for the Lord's wondrous and astounding, unconditional love for us and we trust that this love will be more powerful than the sinfulness of those who die. Christ's love and mercy will be victorious over even the worst that the world can do and the individuals affected within it. We focus most of all on this day, on the gift that their life has been and on God's gift of life after death.

All Souls Day is an occasion to pray with those we love who have died, as well as to pray for them. It is a day to recognize that we belong to a Christian community, a family of God, in which those who have died are united with those who live. The remembrance of All Souls Day, keeping in mind the terrible suffering and death in times of war, flood, earthquake and the like throughout the world, these terrible and frightening events that still go on to this day and show no sign of abating, invite us Christians to reflect deeply upon the destructive power of sin in human lives and also to keep in mind the absolute breadth of God's love for us shown in Jesus's death.

All Souls Day is a day to thank God for those whom we have loved and join with them in prayer. It's also a day to reflect with sorrow and penitence on the power of human greed and sinfulness and hatred, violence and disrespect. This is a day for our hearts to lift up in compassion for the victims of these terrible occurrences in our world and to be utterly amazed by the truth that Christ's love by far outpaces the death-killing ways of this world, which causes so much misery and loss.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Amen.

* Prologue: This feast began in the East to commemorate all martyrs and was progressively adopted in the West. Celebrated on this day in the eighth century and soon widely observed. Honoured today are all holy men and women in glory with Christ: known or unknown, mighty or lowly, all whose lives were modelled on the Beatitudes and on the great commandment of love.
+++++

All Saints Day is a wonderful celebration of the countless multitudes of ordinary people who have lived lives of holiness, faithfulness and love according to Christ's commands, and Jesus' gospel.

And these people are now enjoying the eternal banquet feast of heaven as a reward of their goodness and kindness during their lifetime.

It kind of irritates me that this Solemnity of All Saints gets somewhat sidetracked by reference to the famous, well-known and officially recognised saints in heaven, since they already have their own particular feast day.

Some rare examples of singular holiness even have more than one feast day for the same saint, and rightly so!

The official saints are often praised and lauded publicly and gratefully, (and this is entirely commendable).

And, of course, this feast of all saints definitely includes those official, well-known saints, there's no doubt about that, they're definitely included, as the title of the solemnity of "All Saints" naturally proclaims.

But this feast is especially and pointedly for those holy men, women, and children whose names are not officially recognised, the ones who don't have their own feast day, and yet who are just as much in God's tender arms, rewarded with peace and joy and eternal bliss for their lives of grace.

These are people whom we have known and lived with!

They are family members, friends, colleagues, neighbours, members of our communities, who have lived faithfully to the Lord's Gospel and whose lives, actions and priorities reflect the wonderful Beatitudes as expressed in the Gospel today. And specifically those who are not officially canonised saints, but who most certainly are now with God and the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the angels and saints in heavenly glory.

These are especially those who have lived "hidden, unknown lives," where their Christian heroism and love is not seen or recognised, and whose names are not known. They are all seen and known by God and rewarded by God for the everyday discipleship in their lives.

It's wonderfully reassuring to know that our loved ones who served the Lord in kindness and love all their lives are now at peace and joy in heaven, reunited with all our departed loved ones, and with the officially recognised saints as well, taking their place amongst them as equals at the banquet feast of heaven.

Many of these unknown saints may very well have done greater acts of heroism and sacrifice than many of the officially canonised saints, but their actions and their love is not known to the world. But God knows it.

God is the only one who needs to see and know these acts of kindness and love, and will reward it!

These saints are excellent intercessors for us on our behalf. They pray for us and our intentions as they look upon the very face of God, and praise and worship God night and day.

They present our humble needs, fears and intentions directly to the Lord. And one day we look forward to being reunited with them. What a wonderful day that will be.

And as I say, we have known them. They're our parents, our brothers and sisters, our mentors and guides, our teachers, our priests, our leaders, our religious, our lay people, and also people so humble, so meek, that they are unknown to many or any. Their names are most decidedly written in the book of eternal life, as surely as the most well-known saints of history, and their example, their prayers and their love spurs us on to victory.

All holy angels and saints

Pray for us.

We will savour this time with him before he leaves.

God bless his ministry always.

NOVEMBER MASS ENVELOPES AND THE BOOK OF LIFE REMEMBRANCES

When you place a request in a November Mass  Envelope for a Mass to be offered for your deceased loved ones, the priests will take these Special Intentions to the Masses they preside over. Names from November Mass   Envelopes are not read out individually in the Prayer of the Faithful or mentioned individually at Mass by the Presider. The names that are listed in the Book of Life Remembrances are remembered as a group in the Prayer of the Faithful. All Masses in all Churches for November will be offered with the Souls of the Departed as their Special Intentions.

November Mass Envelopes, along with the Book of Life Remembrances, can be found at the back of all the Churches. These envelopes enable you to add the names of your deceased loved ones and friends.

When it comes to religion, righteousness presents a pitfall. Who is truly righteous? Without God’s grace and mercy, no one is righteous. According to this week’s scripture, those who humble themselves, serve God, keep the faith, and rely on God’s mercy and not their false self-righteousness will be exalted, their prayers will be heard, and the crown will be theirs. To begin with, those who account themselves righteous will find themselves learning a lesson in humility. Humility is the awareness of one’s sins and limitations and the capacity to submit oneself to others. This weekend's scriptures invite us into humility and repentance, to which God richly responds.

The world needs to see Christians burning, not with self-righteous fury at the sliding morals in our country, but with passion for God.” Kevin DeYoung

FANS and DOORS in OUR CHURCHES

It's that time of year again. Please note that we have a policy regarding fans, windows, and doors in the church.

DURING CHURCH SERVICES - FANS IN THE CHURCH DURING the HOT WEATHER ARE TO BE LEFT ON PLEASE AND DOORS TO BE LEFT OPEN PLEASE FOR AIR CIRCULATION AND BREEZES! Please Don't Ask The Coordinator To Turn Them Off. And no one has permission to touch or switch the fan settings except our coordinators. Also, please do not close the doors (or windows) of the church,m as we need a flow of fresh air for the well-being of others. The same applies if it starts raining outside. Please do not shut doors and windows, as almost all of these are protected by balconies and verandahs, and there is virtually no chance of rain getting in. Even when it is raining, it can still be hot and humid, and closing things up and turning off fans worsens the situation. Coordinators are following Church Health and Safety directions. It may be necessary to relocate to another seat that suits your needs better or bring something warm to put on.  As you can imagine, we cannot adjust these large spaces to meet everyone’s personal needs, so we need to set them for general conditions, and individuals can then bring whatever they require for their individual needs. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

NEW PRINCIPAL FOR SAINT MICHAEL’S CATHOLIC COLLEGE

Dear St Michael’s Community,

I write to advise that the Executive Director of Brisbane Catholic Education, Dr Sally Towns, has this morning announced the appointment of Veronica Wasiak as Principal of St Michael’s College, Merrimac, commencing January 2025.

Veronica is well-known to our community. She has been a much-loved member of our College since July 2017, when she became our fifth Deputy Principal. During her time at the College, she has acted as Principal on multiple occasions and has contributed most positively to its significant improvement journey.

Colleagues, students and families highly regard Veronica, and I could not be more delighted for her and those she loves at the news of her appointment.  I do not doubt that the College is in extremely capable and loving hands.

Recruitment for the sixth Deputy Principal of St Michael’s College will commence this week.

Regards, Anthony Elmore. (outgoing Principal).

ELECTION QUEENSLAND - 2024 -

Queensland Catholic Bishops Election Statement

As our community approach an election, whether Federal, State or local, the Catholic Bishops of Queensland invite all to thoughtfully reflect on key issues through the lens of Catholic teachings. Grounded in gospel values, the bishops call for a society that prioritises the dignity of every person, the common good, and care for the vulnerable.

This is one of the ways we put our faith into action.

Each statement below highlights the Catholic perspective on the critical issues voters should consider.

Current Election Statements

The Catholic Bishops of Queensland are urging those seeking election to resist populism and post-truth narratives and for voters to use their votes for the common good.

Archbishop Mark Coleridge warns of the destabilising effect of rising polarization and calls on Queenslanders to engage with key challenges, including healthcare, education, cost of living, housing, and more.

Annual Irish Community November Remembrance Mass

Our Annual Irish Community November Remembrance Mass will be celebrated this year: on Sunday 3 November at 11.30am

in St Joseph the Worker Church, 44 Imperial Parade, Labrador. Please note the change of church from Guardian Angels, Southport

All are invited.  As Catholics, we believe that in death life has not ended but has changed. The departed individual becomes a part of the Communion of Saints, as we eagerly anticipate the moment when we will all be reunited in the heavenly kingdom of God.

Our annual Remembrance Mass provides then a poignant means of honouring and praying for the peaceful repose of departed family members and friends.

And what better prayer can we pray than the great prayer of the Church - our Mass.

And so, please take this opportunity to pray for all those for whom you may be grieving and mourning.

We also invite and encourage you to stay for the tea/coffee afterwards - where you can renew old acquaintances and meet new friends.

Please help us with the catering for the tea/coffee etc., by letting us know if you will be attending, by text to 0407410041

ST VINCENTS CATHOLIC SCHOOL - PROUD AND TRUE DIRECTORY

Dear St Vincent’s Parents and Caregivers,

Get Onboard!

After fantastic responses over the last few years, we are preparing for the St Vincent's Primary Proud & True Business Directory 2025 Edition.

If you have a small business, work for a small business, are a tradie and thinking about your marketing plans for the 2024/2025 Financial Year, you may like to take up a special offer to advertise to our broader school community in our St Vincent’s business directory.

Whether it’s as a landscaper, accountant, solicitor, plumber, electrician, coffee shop owner… just to name a few – this could be for you.

In Australia 86% of people rely on word-of-mouth recommendations! This is all our community businesses packaged into a one stop word of mouth shop.

Our parents and members of our broader school community want to support each other and ensure we are spending our money locally and helping businesses continue to operate and grow. The Proud & True Business Directory will be distributed widely to all staff and families at St Vincent’s.

If you would like to advertise your business in this directory, please contact Ben Ryan on 0432545995 or email  ben@advcollab.com.au

Check out the attachment to this email to see the investment you are making.

 Kind regards,

Dave Sewell (Principal, St Vincent’s Catholic Primary)

THE CAFÉ HAS RE-OPENED

The café outside the Sacred Heart Church has been a wonderful gathering place for parishioners, school parents, staff, and the wider public. The feedback has been that the café is a great idea, but its location in the front of the church is not ideal. The café has now re-opened in the old Atrium building.  This will allow community building whilst giving the church the space it needs for its Masses, Weddings, Baptisms and solemn Funerals.  Please support this excellent continuation of the parish vision. Chris and his staff are delighted to welcome you.

THE BIBLE TIMELINE – THE STORY OF SALVATION

ADULT FAITH FORMATION BIBLE STUDY

From One Holy Couple (Creation) to One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church (Today)

WHEN: On the last Sunday of the Month. The next Session No. 3 will be held on 27 October.

WHERE: in the Parish Hospitality Room - (next to Sacred Heart Church),  50 Fairway Drive, Clear Island Waters

Queensland 4226, on Sundays from 10 am – 12 pm.

There is no cost; however, to participate, you will need to purchase The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation Study Set, which can be obtained from Ascension Press or Garrett Publishing.  The Study Set will contain The Bible Timeline Study Book, Chart and Bookmark -  https://ascensionpress.com/    https://garrattpublishing.com.au/

Around seven years ago, we looked at Unlocking the Mysteries of the Bible. This study program is the complete study version, an In-depth Exploration of Salvation History, which will require considerable pre-reading monthly of various sections of the Bible, and that is why we will do it monthly to ensure we allow ourselves sufficient time to give this Study our full participation.  This way, we will get the most from the sessions, and once we see the big picture of the Bible, we will be able to understand Scripture in a whole new way.  The Mass readings will make more sense.  You will see how our beliefs as Catholics are rooted in Scripture, your prayers will come to life, and you will know how you are part of this remarkable story.

The Bible Timeline® study program takes you on a guided journey through salvation history. Presenter Jeff Cavins shows you how fourteen of the Bible’s narrative books tell the biblical story from beginning to end and gives you the keys to understanding the amazing story woven through Scripture. Using a unique colour-coded chart, you will learn the Bible's significant people, places, and events and discover how they all come together to reveal the remarkable story of our Faith. Bookings can be made by ringing the Parish Office (new): (07) 5671 7388 (9 am – 1 pm Mon-Fri). We’re excited to be able to present this resource, so please join us.

HOSPITAL CALLS - AROUND THE DEANERY -

HELP THE PRIESTS OF THE DEANERY RESPOND TO URGENT CALLS EFFECTIVELY BY CALLING THE FOLLOWING PARISHES' FIRST RESPONDERS TO NEEDS WITHIN THE HOSPITALS LISTED.

To efficiently and speedily deal with the pastoral needs around the Catholic parishes of the Gold Coast, the parishes within this Deanery have the practice of having the first call for emergencies go to the priests of the parish where the hospital is located.  Here is a helpful guide to the hospitals and their attendant priests. A nursing home call also follows this procedure, where the first priest to call is a priest from the parish within which the Nursing Home is located.  Please help us service the region effectively and help prevent delays in response by calling the nearest parish.

GOSPEL THIS WEEKEND

Homily: Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time.  .Year B - Sunday, 27 October 2024

Here is a blind beggar by the name of Bartimaeus. He simply will NOT be silenced. He calls out for help even when well-meaning (but wrong-footed) people tell him to be silent. He persistently cries to Jesus for help, because he KNOWS that Jesus is the Messiah. He also KNOWS that Jesus can help him. {FHL}

++++

I can't help wondering if Bartimaeus is not the inspiration for Jesus' parable of the persistent neighbour. He keeps knocking and keeps calling out until he gets what he needs. As Jesus said in that parable, other people would have given the persistent neighbour what they needed just because they wanted him to stop irritating them and to give them peace. So, how much more can we expect God to turn a real listening ear, a sympathetic ear to people who cry out in their need! Naturally, God is very much concerned with our welfare and with what we need. God doesn't answer us merely to shut us up but out of the deepest care and compassion.

The Gospel passage also says that Bartimaeus does something very powerful: He 'throws off his cloak' (the cloak of a beggar was like a "badge" of a beggar), and goes to Jesus. He is already showing that he KNOWS he is not going back to his old life and doesn't want to.

Jesus asks him "what do you want me to do for you?"

Jesus asks all of us, "What do you want from me? Think about what you are really asking of me. What do you really want? What do you really NEED?"

Naturally, Bartimaeus is asking for his sight back. But Jesus is asking him a deeper question: "Do you realize the consequences of what you are asking? Do you understand what this request is going to lead you to receive?" For Bartimaeus, it will mean a completely new life. When he receives his sight, he will no longer be a beggar, and he will have to face a new life, a new vocation, and a new everything. This is both exciting and scary.

A true encounter with Jesus is always a joy and a challenge. Our encounter with Jesus, is a two-way dialogue; We speak to God of our needs and hopes and fears and God replies with a (silent) question: "what is it that you are really asking?"…. and "Are you prepared for the whole change of circumstances that goes with the encounter?"

Apparently, Bartimaeus is one of the few people Jesus cured who we are explicitly told in the text that he also went on to become one of his disciples. So, it is clear that as well as regaining his physical sight, Bartimaeus (equally importantly) has shown enormous clarity of spiritual insight, into who Jesus is and what following him means.

When Bartimaeus regained his sight and Jesus tells him "go your way" and beautifully, Bartimaeus ' "way" is now to FOLLOW Jesus, because it says he follows him along "the way." He became a follower, a disciple. As he walks along following Jesus he will continue to gain NEW (spiritual) sight and knowledge. In another sense, we all gain new sight as we cast off the "cloak" of old ways and old excuses and faithfully walk along the new ways of Jesus.

We are like Bartimaeus, asking Jesus to show us and teach us deeper ways to combine mercy and justice, faithfulness to his teaching and loving compassion for those who have stumbled and are searching for answers.

As we walk along the road of God's mercy, let us explore and celebrate the richness of God's mercy and love. Like Bartimaeus let us continue to see with the eyes of faith and love, and follow the Lord along the exciting ways of the newness of sight.

We need to be very careful about spiritual blindness. It can be a very subtle thing. We must all be on our guard against spiritual blindness and we would do best to suspect that we have aspects of Spiritual blindness in our lives and search for it and put any aspects of it before our Lord for the purpose of healing.

You and I may very well have a glaring blindness to some aspects of Jesus' explicit teachings and message.

How is it that we can hear the gospel and not always realise that this very gospel is 'convicting' us of precisely the qualities it lists. How is it that when we listen to gospels we do not realize that this message is directed at us and that we might also be the Pharisees and the critics or the hypocrites. Christ asks us to be open to this possibility. To ask ourselves constantly, do I do that? How do I do this? And not too quick to say, "ah that is not me, that is other people!"   Are we sure?????

Christ invites us to be transformed…. If we ask the Lord to free us from spiritual blindness, the Lord will do it, and show us the contradictions. if we know what it is we are asking for…. And what it means for us….it is worth sitting in some discomfort as the Lord searches and reveals the flaws.

TO what extent are we capable of being blind to the challenging message and vision of Jesus? In what ways do we "listen and listen and yet 'not hear'"? In what ways do we look and look and not see……??

Lord, show us the light…. Help us to see… and to trust in your challenging, but healing word.

JOBS AROUND THE ARCHDIOCESE

https://brisbanecatholic.org.au/careers/

The Archdiocese of Brisbane has standards of conduct for workers to maintain a safe and healthy environment for children.  Our commitment to these standards requires conducting working with children checks and background referencing for all persons who will engage in direct and regular involvement with children and young people (0 - 18 years) or adults at risk. The organisation is fully committed to child safety and has zero tolerance for abusing children or adults at risk.

YEAR OF PRAYER - RESOURCE

Dear Father,

You have given the saints in heaven eternal happiness and they now live in the fullness of your glory.

Because of their holy love for you, they also care about us, our family, our friends, our church, and our neighbours.

Thank you for the gift of their friendship and the witness of their holy lives.

We ask our patron saints and every saint who has become especially dear to us to intercede for us.

We ask them to help us journey safely on the narrow path that leads to heaven.

O Lord, give us their protection.

Grant us their assistance in overcoming temptation and gaining the fullness of life with you.

Amen.

A VOCATION VIEW:

“You are a priest forever, according to the order of   Melchizedek.” The priesthood of Jesus Christ is not bestowed by ancestry, as   the Temple priesthood was, but by selection by Christ in imitation of   Melchizedek. (Hebrews 5:6)

‘Master, grant that I may see’. The values we were blind to in our   youth now become clear.  Blindness gives way to vision through faith in   Jesus.  As children of God, we are called to do good things and to   witness God’s love.

STEWARDSHIP -  October 27, 2024 - 30th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“And Jesus said to him, ‘Go your way; your faith has made you well.’ And immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.” (Mark 10:52)

Faith is believing in something even though you may not be able to physically see it. Many people think that miracles don’t happen anymore. This is hard, but try to focus on the positive and not the negative things in your life. When you focus on your blessings instead of your hardships, miracles will seem common. You will see God’s active presence in your daily life. You will begin to develop an attitude of gratitude.

The vision of Stewardship speaks in every aspect of life, inviting everyone to be thankful, generous, and accountable for what each has been given.

TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH  - Make a bold move

“Holiness is heroic,” says Father Robert Barron in his 2014 documentary film Heroic Priesthood. Indeed, Christ’s invitation, says Barron, “is an invitation to an extraordinary life.” On this Priesthood Sunday, give thanks for the ordained men who have said the great yes to God’s invitation to serve. Then take time to discern the noble purpose to which God is calling you.

“You have nothing . . . to fear . . . Get up! He is calling you!” [Mark 10:46-52]

PLANNED GIVING ENVELOPES AVAILABLE

FOR COLLECTION AT THE PARISH OFFICE

INSPIRATION FROM THE SAINTS:

  • OCTOBER 28 - F - Saint Simon and Saint Jude, Apostles

    • Wisdom of St Jude  –"Jude, a slave of Jesus Christ and brother of James, to those who are called, beloved in God the Father and kept safe for Jesus Christ: May mercy, peace and love be yours in abundance. (Jude 1:1-2)

    • "But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith, pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in the love of God and wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. (Jude 1:20-21).

  • All Saints

    • This feast began in the East to commemorate all martyrs and was progressively adopted in the West. Celebrated on this day in the eighth century and soon widely observed. Honoured today are all holy men and women in glory with Christ: known or unknown, mighty or lowly, all whose lives were modelled on the Beatitudes and on the great commandment of love.

  • All Souls

    • This day of commemoration began early in the Middle Ages with annual prayers for the dead in monastic communities. Fixed on this day, it spread more widely after the tenth century and now ranks with the principal feast days in the liturgical calendar. Commonly known as All Souls, it expresses Christian faith in the communion of saints and our need to pray for one another in the Church, especially those souls in purgatory "who have been buried in their human imperfection".

Pope Francis to young economists: ‘Love is the first and greatest factor of change’

Pope Francis meets with young adults participating in the annual Economy of Francesco gathering on Sept 25, 2024, as the movement for economic change — inspired by the pope and St. Francis of Assisi — launches a permanent foundation.

Pope Francis on Wednesday met with young adults participating in the annual Economy of Francesco gathering as the movement for economic change — inspired by the pope and St. Francis of Assisi — launched a permanent foundation.

“It is not the great and powerful who change the world for the better: Love is the first and greatest factor of change,” the pope told the foundation’s founding members and others from more than 30 countries at the Vatican on Sept. 25.

According to an announcement on Instagram, the new foundation, formally instituted on Sept. 23, will work in three areas: research and study, business and innovation, and education and culture.

Launched from Assisi, Italy, the foundation’s mission is to foster a new economic culture — one that prioritizes human dignity, environmental care, and integral development,” the announcement said.

The first Economy of Francesco conference was held online in November 2020 in response to the pope’s call for “an economy attentive to the person and to the environment.”

The livestreamed event has been repeated every year, and in 2022, a three-day in-person conference was held in Assisi, Italy, with Pope Francis attending on the last day.

“Thank you,” Pope Francis said on Wednesday, “for having taken seriously my invitation to ‘reanimate’ the economy and for having welcomed the indications I gave to you on the occasion of your annual conferences.”

“They form part of the framework of the social doctrine of the Church and, in the final analysis, have their root in the Gospel,” he said. “You may have encountered many teachers over the course of your studies or work experiences, but the reference to the Gospel, while in sincere dialogue with everyone, guarantees you an exceptional master, Jesus, the only one who could say: ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life’ (Jn 14:6).”

The pope also underlined that “the world of economics is in need of change” but added that while it may be good to become a great economist, government minister, or Nobel laureate, the best way is through love.

“You will change [the economy] above all by loving it, in the light of God, by imbuing it with the values and the strength of goodness, with the evangelical spirit of Francis of Assisi,” he said. “[St. Francis] was the son of a merchant, he knew the strengths and defects of that world. Love the economy, truly love the workers, the poor, prioritizing the situations of greatest suffering.”

“Be brave, dear friends! Be brave!” he encouraged. “If you are faithful to your vocation, your life will flourish, you will have wonderful stories to tell your children and grandchildren. … Believe me: It is worth spending your life to change the world for the better.”

During the Wednesday audience, Pope Francis also noted the presence of several babies in the room off the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall.

“I see that there are some children here: This is good, in a culture that prefers to have dogs and cats rather than children,” he said, adding: “We must beat Italy up a bit” in reference to the country’s low birth rate.

** The significance of the ancient Catholic Blessing Symbol. “20 C+M+B 24”

An ancient medieval practice that developed in the Catholic Church was to bless one’s home with blessed chalk at the yearly epiphany.  On the door or the lintel will be this symbol:

This means that 2000 years ago, after Christ’s birth, Wise Men visited and gave homage to the Lord and were welcomed into the hospitality of the Holy Family’s abode. We dedicate the present year of this century, ‘24, to the protection of the Lord. May the Lord bless this abode.

The letters C+M+B represent Caspar, Bathasar and Melchior, the three Wise Men.  CMB is also the initials of the Latin phrase “Christus Mansionem Benedicat” - “May Christ Bless this dwelling place.”
