THE PASTOR'S POST: Can't Live Without Them
For some time now Archbishop Coleridge has been reminding us that parish life in the future will not be able to operate as we presently do. He frequently speaks about the need for us to look at new forms of leadership, presumably lay leaders, since all the ordained ones are being fully utilised. While traditionally we have come to see ecclesial leadership as jobs occupied by priests, religious men and women and certain paid laity, there are only a few functions in Christan leadership that the laity cannot fulfil. In my youth almost all Catholic institutions, like parishes, hospitals and schools, while employing qualified lay staff, always had an ordained or consecrated person as the administrator/ leader, not always trained for the task, but possessing other essential qualities, dedication and inexpensiveness. Well, clearly that pool is drying up very quickly, and so it has become necessary for us to look to other forms of leadership if we are to maintain our presence in these important functions of Church life.
When it comes to parish life, we would be hard pressed to function without volunteers. Those generous people who range from those who form the "priceless capital" of social and charitable networks, to the many behind-the-scenes people who prepare others for the sacraments and initiation into the Catholic Christian faith, who sing and play music, who read and welcome, and clean churches and serve at liturgies, and who generally maintain the day to day operations of parish life. Even though most people are pressed for time, hold two jobs and form households where both parents work, there are tried and true ways to involve more and more of these blessed people in limited, but significant ways.
One of the wonderful consequences that comes from this form of volunteerism is that we have noticed a relatively recent change of mindset. While volunteers used to "help out Father", by taking on some menial tasks, many of these people have now come to understand that they are not strictly volunteers by helping someone out, but they recognise that they are "church" helping themselves out, doing what they do as a baptismal right, not just by permission or kindness.
As they come to see what is required and what they can do to be a more involved participant in the life of the church, they are apt to have a sense of ownership whose larger objective is the overall need and benefit to the parish as a whole. Some of these volunteers are seeing in their ministries the essence of what a church can be with their involvement, and many of these unsung heroines and heroes and looking to feed their motivation and inspiration through a better understand of their faith through the scriptures, the history and teachings of theologians, the structure and hierarchy of the Church and the leadership of Pope Francis. In other words they are moving from doing a job in the parish, to participating in the mission of a Christ-centred community. Relying less on permission from the pastor and more on a personal call and charism. As they come to do more, they seek to know more. It really is church in action.
This understanding has as its foundation in the fact that parishes that are inviting and active, that are open to disclosure, varied shared and collaborative ministries, and above all, where there is a sense of ownership, will experience greater participation and stronger lay contributions. It stands to reason – what people own, they take care of. While for others who use the church as a quick stop service centre or being available if and when they need it, tend to not fully grasp that liturgies are not done for them, but with them.
Meanwhile we should look to the wonderful example of our fellow Catholics who live in the remote parts of Australia, who continue to growing in lay leadership and participation, even though they might have Mass available only a few times a year, they are still very much a Eucharistic people call by their baptism to be servants to each other.

ST KEVIN'S PRIMARY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL,
MR PETER ANDERSON RETIRES
On behalf of the Surfers Paradise Catholic Parish, we give heartfelt thanks to Mr Peter Anderson for his wonderful leadership of St Kevin's Catholic Primary School at Benowa. We are sad to see him retire but are happy for him in this next wonderful chapter of his life. Thanks, Peter, for your leadership, wisdom and faith. May God bless you and keep you always. We are delighted that whilst Peter is retiring, he and his wife Cathy, are staying part of our Surfers Paradise Catholic Parish family.
Here is a message from the Principal of St Kevin's School,
Mr Peter Anderson:
It is my time to graduate from school. I have been in school for the past 61 years as a student, teacher and principal. I commenced with Brisbane Catholic Education as a teacher at St Francis Xavier, Runaway Bay in 1977 and in August 1983 was appointed foundation principal of Star of the Sea, Hervey Bay. Following my 10 years in Hervey Bay, I had the privilege of leading Guardian Angels, Ashmore until April 2003. I then spent 12.5 years as principal of St Francis Xavier and finally, I was honoured to be given the opportunity to lead St Kevin's from 2016.
Here I am now on Long Service Leave and loving it. This period of leave has allowed me to reflect on my journey and to reach this decision. I have given my best and now it is time for me to say thank you and farewell.
I will continue Long Service Leave for the remainder of 2021 and will formally resign as Principal of St Kevin's from the commencement of 2022. Brisbane Catholic Education will shortly commence the processes and protocols that will lead to the selection of a new principal for the community of St Kevin's. They will also appoint the Acting Principal for the remainder of 2021.
During my career, I have been blessed with wonderful opportunities and I have worked with and for many exceptional people. I sincerely appreciate that a career as a teacher in a Catholic School provides a unique opportunity to live and work the faith that my parents gifted to me many years ago. I will continue to treasure the stories, traditions, and sacramental experiences that have uplifted me and inspired my school and family life. Please accept my sincere thanks for the part that each of you and your children contributed to my journey.
As I cast a line into our bright blue Gold Coast waters, I will enjoy the memories and always wish for you and your families God's blessings in abundance.
Cheers,
Peter Anderson. Principal of St Kevin's Catholic Primary School, Benowa.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION -
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive recompense, according to what he did in the body, whether good or evil." - (2 Corinthians 5:10)
We are all accountable for all of the gifts God has given us – our time, our talent and our treasure; everything we have and everything we are. Each of us is accountable not only for our own life but for the lives of others as well. One day God will ask each of us what we did with the gifts we were given. How will you respond?
The vision of Stewardship speaks in every aspect of life, inviting everyone to be thankful, generous and accountable for what each has been given.

St Paul 's Missionary Journey through His Letters Fortnightly on a Tuesday
ALL WELCOME.
Our next session will be on Tuesday 22nd June at 6pm
in the Parish Hospitality Room.
If you would like to participate in this please ring 0409 486 326. This is a great opportunity for us to reflect, discuss, share and enrich our faith and relationship with Christ.
Ponder the beauty of the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to her cousin Elizabeth. It's a wonder-filled encounter with God's power to transform human life, as two holy women—cousins Mary and Elizabeth—embrace their unusual and graced pregnancies. Their joy trumps any worry as they glorify the Lord who lifts up the lowly and fills the hungry with good things. Mary's words have echoed through centuries of faith, calling all believers to see the presence of God in the unexpected. Ask for the grace to see the Holy, today.

THE GOSPEL THIS WEEKEND - The Mustard Seed
I love the wonderful practicality of the prayers for this weekend's liturgy… the opening prayer, or the "collect" as it is called, gathers our many prayers and thoughts and distils them in these wonderful thoughts: "Grant us the help of your grace always, so that we may please you with our resolve and our DEEDS…"
In other words, may your help and guidance Lord, lead us to pleasing attitudes and practical action.
The first reading this weekend and the Psalm refer to the image of the majestic and awe-inspiring sight of the towering cedar trees of Lebanon. This was a familiar and powerful image representing God's Kingdom, and God's people. It was a strong, powerful, impressive and providential image.
But then we move to the gospel. Jesus asks himself: "What image can I give you for the Kingdom of God?"
The people would have expected him to refer to the traditional image of the royal, strong, immovable Cedar tree, which towers over everything else and can be seen far and wide.
So, it is extremely surprising when Our Lord uses quite a different image. Christ tells us the Kingdom of God starts out like a mustard seed, a tiny, almost imperceptible seed, virtually inconsequential to the casual observer. And yet this tiny seed grows up to become the largest shrub. Here again Our Lord deeply surprises his listeners. He does not say that the tiny seed grows to become the largest tree of all. No, it becomes the largest SHRUB!!!
His point is both surprising and beautiful! Our Lord is telling us all that God's Kingdom is not only to be seen in the obvious and towering grandeur of a mighty Cedar tree, but it is much more subtle and widespread. God's Kingdom is still sturdy and productive, and more down-to-earth. The Kingdom is more widespread. At times it can be patchy and certainly looking less "royal" and "majestic" and more suburban. It is more practical and "every day," but it is better adapted to producing many fruits and is also adapted for survival in many different harsh environments.
But, just like the image of the cedar, this large shrub, which has grown up from a surprisingly tiny mustard seed, still provides adequate shelter and welcoming protection for all that gather under its leaves. Again, not so high-class, but every bit as effective and much more involved in the lives of those around it. God's Kingdom doesn't tower loftily over everything else. Rather, it is in-and-amongst everything and involved directly in its surroundings.
This image is a good one which gives us hope and courage. Our human efforts can be spasmodic and varying in consistency. However, God is constantly and quietly at work, in obvious as well as invisible ways.
We can help or hinder God's work. We can cooperate in it or frustrate it. But whether we cooperate or block God's work, God keeps working and will succeed in the end. No matter what setbacks or frustrations, God is willing us to keep working away with his grace, and our hopes will be richly rewarded.
Sometimes the smallest seeds of action for good, lead to the greatest transformations. We ought never to underestimate what God is working on in our lives. For example, the extraordinary Rosa Parks, an African-American lady in 1955 during the time of segregation in the USA> She sat on a bus seat at a time when the law insisted that African Americans had to vacate their seats for white people, irrespective of their age. Rosa refused to move and was arrested. This seed of resistance sparked a whole human rights spotlight that transformed that nation and inspired the world. When I first heard the story of Rosa, I was moved by the wonderful integrity and bravery of this action which led to enormous results.
God is at work all the time in big and small ways and we, his disciples, are called to respond to what God is doing and jump in and cooperate with it.
It is good for us to keep in mind the purpose of the sowing of the seed and its harvesting… the seed is to produce fruits. God's word is a powerful seed that is planted and nurtured to produce fruits… We must not fall into the trap that the Pharisees and scribes did in Christ's day. They turned the seed of God's word and Kingdom into an academic novelty and an exercise in endless rules and regulations. The Faith became almost a thing in itself, separated from its purpose to produce the fruits of God's kingdom.. love, compassion, kindness, mercy and faithfulness…. And so much more…
To use a rather bold image from an ancient writer…. "sheep do not 'spit-up' the grass they have eaten, in order to show the shepherd how much they have consumed. No, they digest the grass and process it and it turns into something tangible to produce wool and milk…."
So, we too plant the seed of God's word and nurture it by God's word and sacrament and by constant prayer and thanksgiving to the Lord… and God's grace sets to work in us to produce real and practical fruits for the building up of God's kingdom. Never just for itself but for the greater glory of God and God's Kingdom.

POPE FRANCIS: "Don't be closed off to the Holy Spirit."
"The world needs men and women who are not closed in on themselves, but filled with the Holy Spirit. Closing oneself off from the Holy Spirit means not only a lack of freedom; it is a sin.
There are many ways one can close oneself off to the Holy Spirit: by selfishness for one's own gain; by rigid legalism – seen in the attitude of the doctors of the law to whom Jesus referred as "hypocrites"; by neglect of what Jesus taught; by living the Christian life not as service to others but in the pursuit of personal interests; and in so many other ways.
However, the world needs the courage, hope, faith and perseverance of Christ's followers. The world needs the fruits, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, as Saint Paul lists them: "love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control" (Gal 5:22).
The gift of the Holy Spirit has been bestowed upon the Church and upon each one of us, so that we may live lives of genuine faith and active charity, that we may sow the seeds of reconciliation and peace.
Strengthened by the Spirit – who guides, who guides us into the truth, who renews us and the whole earth, and who gives us his fruits – strengthened in the Spirit and by these many gifts, may we be able to battle uncompromisingly against sin, to battle uncompromisingly against corruption, which continues to spread in the world day after day, by devoting ourselves with patient perseverance to the works of justice and peace.

WORSHIP AND FAITH SECTION - New Australian Lectionary?
The official lectionary of the Catholic Church in Australia is based on the Jerusalem Bible (1966). This translation is also shared with the United Kingdom. The USA uses the New American Bible translation and Canada uses the New Revised Standard Version, with adaptations approved by the Vatican for liturgical use.
The difficulty is that it has taken years to consider a new lectionary and the Jerusalem lectionary for Australia has been out of print for many years now. The books have fallen apart and been replaced. As such, copies of the New Revised Standard Version (Canadian lectionary) are used here in our parish. Australian publishers have delayed any plans to release new copies of the old lectionary as there is strong indication the translation will be changed soon. It is looking more likely that the Australian church will choose the Revised New Jerusalem Bible, the updated version of the Jerusalem bible. This Revised New Jerusalem Bible in 2018. Substantially revising the JB and NJB texts, the new translation "applies formal equivalence translation for a more accurate rendering of the original scriptures, sensitivity to readable speech patterns and more inclusive language." It contains new study notes and book introductions written by Henry Wansbrough, OSB. This needs final approval, so we still await with eager anticipation. This explains why the version you hear on Sundays here in this parish is a different translation from the people's missal books you have for your devotions. Hopefully one day soon the new lectionary will be published and the lectionary and the peoples' missal will match again. The passages of scripture are the same, they are just from different translations. The annual publication "Break Open the Word" from Liturgy Brisbane features both translations in the guide, the back of the book features the NRSV version for parishes using this one.
An interesting article on lectionaries can be found here, it's well worth a read. The writer points out that the official Catholic lectionary is actually not a specific full "translation of the bible" from one particular version of the bible, but is an official list of scriptural references set down for each day of the church year. The writer argues that it might be better to choose the best translation for different texts rather than picking one single translation.

COMMITMENT TO CHILD AND VULNERABLE ADULT SAFETY
"The Archdiocese of Brisbane holds that children and vulnerable adults are a gift from God with an intrinsic right to dignity of life, respect and security from physical and emotional harm. They are to be treasured, nurtured and protected from any harm." As a Parish Community, we pray for a change of heart, that we respond to our grief by reaching out to one another in truth and love.
Acknowledgement of Country
We respectfully acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the First Peoples of this country, and especially acknowledge the traditional owners on whose lands we live and work throughout the Catholic Archdiocese of Brisbane. And here in this parish of Surfers Paradise, we particularly acknowledge and pay our respects to the Kombumerri clan of the Yugambeh people of the Gold Coast. We also acknowledge Elders, past and present and pay tribute to those who have contributed to the social, economic, cultural, political and spiritual life of our community. This acknowledgement affirms our commitment to social justice and the importance of healing and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
