PASTOR'S POST: "....AND THEY'RE OFF . . ."
Sometimes when I look at the congregation after communion has been distributed, it seems that a quarter of the seats are now empty, and people have vanished out the door. Communion seemed to be the signal for the exodus. They got what they came for, so they hightail it to their car at such speed as to create the impression that they just remembered they left the iron on or the bath running. Some of the Formula 1 pit crews could learn valuable lessons on-grid starts from some of our post-communion parishioners starting their engines.
All of these are good people, I'm sure, but it would have been better if what they had on their minds was participation, not departure.
We come to Mass each Sunday for several reasons. We gather as Christians to celebrate the most momentous events in human history – the death and resurrection of Christ. We come winding our way from different places and circumstances to give congregational expression to our common faith. And we gather around the table of the Lord to receive food for life's journey, to receive his body and blood, to be in the closest possible union with Christ and with one another. It's really big stuff that is happening there and it deserves some focus and reverence.
Going to Communion is not a neutral exercise. It's not just something we do as a matter of course. It is not something that takes place in a moral vacuum or an action that we perform independently of our lives outside of the Church. If the food from heaven that we receive is God's gift to us, then the way we receive that food should be our gift to God. What we have just received should feel heavy on our hands since what we are offering is our nearest shot at connecting what we do in Church with what we do outside – and that exercise surely takes more time than it takes to get from the communion line to the Church door. Communion is a challenge to good living that we cannot cynically ignore. If we aren't expected to be saints to receive communion then we should at least try to be repentant sinners. Communion is not a prize for being good, as much as a support for the person who seeks to be genuinely better.
None of us can come blamelessly to the table of the Lord, but we shouldn't come shamelessly either.
So next time you are tempted to eat and run just ask yourself,
"What have I done, am doing or will do to deserve what has just happened?"
"Why is my need to get home more pressing than staying with my faith community to receive yet another blessing?"
"Is what I am rushing to, more important than staying a few minutes to say thanks for the sacrifice?"
"Is picking up a loaf of bread on the way home as significant as the bread I have just consumed?"

Saint Peter Claver (1580-1654) was a Jesuit priest dedicated to baptizing and serving enslaved Africans in Cartagena, Colombia, a major slave-trade port. While Claver was ahead of many of his peers in at least recognizing the humanity of Africans and poured out his life to alleviate the great suffering he encountered, we need to acknowledge that the colonial system that enslaved Africans was allowed to continue unabated for centuries without much church resistance. How can we and our communities of faith challenge the enduring legacy of racism today, inspired by Claver's witness of service and the gospel mandate to love? (Luke 6:27-38 (440). Jesus teaches us that we are called to love one another. Love involves sacrifice. Sacrifice is a word that many of us don't like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is "to make holy," from the words "sacer" = sacred and "facere" = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.
The vision of Stewardship speaks in every aspect of life, inviting everyone to be thankful, generous and accountable for what each has been given.

BAPTISM in Surfers Paradise
Surfers Paradise Parish follows the policies of the Archdiocese of Brisbane as it welcomes each person into the family of the Church through the waters of Baptism. Baptism is the first of three Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist.
Infants and children are baptised at the request of parents. Within the Baptism ritual, parents promise to accept the responsibility of training their children in the practice of the faith and to raise their children to understand and live God's commandments. Parents can request baptism for their child by filling out an enrolment form, available on our parish website www.surfersparadiseparish.com.au Once the online baptism form has been received, our Baptism Coordinator will provide details for preparation for the Sacrament of Baptism and will also explain the requirements for booking the Baptism Celebration day.
CONFIRMATION in Surfers Paradise The second group of Confirmation candidates for 2021 have begun their preparation!
Over 90 children and their families have started their "At Home Preparation for Confirmation". They will celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation on October 15. We ask all parishioners to continue to pray for these children, their sponsors and their families. May they open their hearts and minds to the light and love of God as they seek to learn more about the gifts of the Spirit. And may our whole Parish family be inspired by the power of the Holy Spirit alive among us, today and always.
For your child to be included in next year's preparation Confirmation group, please go to the parish website www.surfersparadiseparish.com.au and complete an online enrolment application. Please use the drop-down menu under Sacraments and click on Confirmation (under Sacraments). Then scroll down to and click on CHILDREN'S SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM APPLICATION FORM (in the blue box). Once you click on SUBMIT, you will receive an automated response so that you know that your completed application has been received. Next year, you will receive a personal email a couple of months prior to the next preparation group starting (around beginning of Term Two)
EUCHARIST - FIRST COMMUNION
This year, 105 Surfers Paradise Parish children celebrated their First Holy Communion over two weekends - May 30 and June 6, 2021. They were two wonderful celebrations.
For children seeking to receive their First Communion in 2022, the parents of children who were confirmed in 2021 will be contacted via email in Term One next year. This email will explain the dates and requirements for meetings etc. If your child was baptised and confirmed in another parish and you would like to join the group making their First Communion in Surfers Paradise Parish in 2022, please go to the parish website www.surfersparadiseparish.com.au and complete an online enrolment application. The process is similar to that described above in the Confirmation section.
RECONCILIATION
In the Archdiocese of Brisbane, Reconciliation follows the Sacraments of Initiation. That is, Reconciliation, also known as Penance, follows Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. The Surfers Paradise Sacramental Team's plan for Reconciliation is to prepare a program similar in style to the Confirmation and First Communion At Home Preparation Programs. This will be a lengthy task, we are unable to provide an exact starting date, but we urge all parents and caregivers to continue to check our newsletter for updates.

THE GOSPEL THIS WEEKEND -
This weekend Our Lord teaches us a most important lesson. He reminds us that following him is the path of unselfish service. Love and sacrifice…. Our Lord also shows us that God's idea of greatness is very different from the ideas of the world…
I love the system of continuous readings that the Catholic Church and many other denominations have developed. The Lectionary cycle…. I think that it is a true genius that allows the Bible to come alive in our yearly journey…. The readings this weekend are challenging, but I love that too…. It would be easier for us to pick the readings we like…. To pick the texts that most speak to us and expound on them…. But perhaps if I were to do that, I would be sorely tempted to pass over those texts that challenge me, that move me out of my comfort zone… that are inviting me to be a disciple in the building up of Christ's Kingdom and not my watered-down vision of what I think the Kingdom of God should be…. Through our journey through the continuous cycle of readings… we don't choose the text…. It chooses us… and it reads our lives and God transforms them, reshaping us in God's image, not in our own….
Scenes like this weekend's gospel can be very sobering and they can give the impression that the disciples never fully understood the Lord's teaching. But we have to keep in mind that the gospels largely are a sneak peek into the formation and training that the disciples were getting from Jesus during his earthly ministry. Later, after Jesus' death and resurrection and ascension, and after the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, the disciples were transformed and enlightened. They finally understood the message and teaching of Jesus. No longer were they wrangling and jockeying for the best places of honour, no longer were they squabbling over who was the greatest or what part of the work Jesus left for us to complete was their part, and which was the most lucrative part of the ministry.
We are very fortunate that the gospels are not merely the END result of all Jesus' teachings, with all the rough bits polished off. We are very blessed that the gospels show us the journey of understanding and learning and change of vision that the disciples had to go through before they fully comprehended the message of Jesus. If we only got the final results, we would not have understood the journey of discovery and conversion that we too must undergo. We must let go of our old ways of thinking and embrace the new ways of the gospel. The old ways were of self-advantage, self-focus and 'what can I get out of this for myself?" - and the new ways of the gospel are self-sacrificing service and consideration for others, a mindset that puts oneself last and servant of all.
The first reading reminds us of something we have to be very wary of. When we become aware of some challenging aspects of our own weaknesses and selfishness, it is sorely tempting to want to 'shoot the messenger." This is what happened in the Old Testament days, and it is alive and well today too: The prophets pointed out the ways the people were not living up to God's ways and what did the people do? in the main, they didn't start working on their areas of weakness and their blind-spots, but rather typically they started trying to discredit the prophets and ignore and ridicule the message and in many occasions, they killed the prophets rather than deal with the actual problem – their wrongful ways and attitudes.
Do we ever see that tendency in ourselves in one way or another… we become aware of a weakness or an area in our lives or areas for growth or change in our personalities (ones that need work and improvement), but instead of humbly beginning the work of asking God to change these aspects and asking for God's grace to remove these barriers and wrongdoings, we just fob off the message or blame the messenger. This would have to be one of THE most unhelpful and dangerous behaviours around. In a way, it is a self-defensive mechanism, (designed to protect us), but it ends up keeping us stuck in bad ways and repeated mistakes. It is not being honest and open with ourselves and it is not admitting our utter dependence on God's mercy, love and grace to slowly but surely change us to be more like the disciples he calls us to be. God loves us despite our sinfulness, but God doesn't want us to stay stuck in the mud either! God is offering us the grace to rise above our weaknesses if we let him address our sinfulness – if we bravely and honestly face the truth of them!
St James spells it out in the second reading: "Wherever you find jealousy and ambition, you find disharmony and wicked things of every kind being done; whereas the wisdom … from above is essentially about working for peace, and shows itself in kindness, consideration of others, compassion, and results in good actions. If we are on the right track, partiality or hypocrisy and endless wrangling and fights and disruptions would not be present. ….. holiness.. in God's eyes is being a Peacemakers, not a stirrer or an agitator for one's own desires and ambitions. (James 3:16 - 4:3).
He says it really clearly: We wouldn't have jealousy or wrangling if people had a self-sacrificing, serving, considerate approach to others, above themselves. Jesus is the perfect example of this self-sacrificing approach. He could have claimed all authority and all privilege but instead emptied himself completely for others. It is starkly and shockingly challenging. Will we follow in the master's footsteps or try to go in circles on our own?

POPE FRANCIS: POPE FRANCIS AND OTHER CHRISTIAN LEADERS ARE CALLING FOR DEFINITIVE ACTION TO HALT CLIMATE CHANGE.
The leaders of three prominent Christian denominations have issued an unprecedented joint statement calling on people of all faiths to take action to halt the devastating impacts of climate change.
The statement from Pope Francis, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby and Orthodox Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew — who collectively minister to more than a billion-and-a-half Christian faithful — comes as the world's political leadership prepares for a major United Nations conference on climate change, COP26, scheduled for early November in Scotland.
"September is celebrated by many Christians as the Season of Creation, an opportunity to pray and care for God's creation," the letter said. "As world leaders prepare to meet in November at Glasgow to deliberate on the future of our planet, we pray for them and consider what choices we must all make."
The statement by the clerics arrives on the heels of a major report from the United Nations' climate science body that warned climate change is accelerating and is almost entirely driven by human activity. It also adds to a diverse chorus of people demanding bolder action on climate change at a time when research shows that deep cuts must be made in fossil fuel use to avert the worst effects of climate change.
On Monday, more than 200 of the world's leading medical and health journals issued an unusual joint statement calling climate change the biggest threat to public health, not the pandemic.
"Widespread floods, fires and droughts threaten entire continents," the clergy wrote in their statement last week. "Sea levels rise, forcing whole communities to relocate; cyclones devastate entire regions, ruining lives and livelihoods. Water has become scarce and food supplies insecure, causing conflict and displacement for millions of people."
The religious leaders also give special attention to the poor in the statement, who they note have made the least contribution to the greenhouse gas pollution that drives climate change but bear "the most catastrophic consequences."
"We call on everyone, whatever their belief or world view, to endeavour to listen to the cry of the earth and of people who are poor, examining their behaviour and pledging meaningful sacrifices for the sake of the earth which God has given us," the message said.
In the United States, the world's largest historic emitter, Congress is currently considering the nation's most expansive climate proposal ever: a $3.5 trillion plan that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., says would put the U.S. nearly on target to reach its 50% emissions reduction goal by 2030.
Whether that legislation can pass could come down in part to a compromise between two prominent Catholic politicians: President Biden, who views the plan as a centrepiece of his political legacy, and Sen. Joe Manchin, a conservative Democrat from West Virginia who last week called for a "strategic pause" on the legislation in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece.
MANCHIN OPPOSES ELIMINATING FOSSIL FUELS
Manchin, who says he is concerned about the scale of recent government spending, told CNN this summer that he's "very, very disturbed" by the climate measures in the bill, which he worries will eliminate fossil fuels.
"If they're eliminating fossils, and I'm finding out there's a lot of language in places they're eliminating fossils, which is very, very disturbing," he said, "because if you're sticking your head in the sand, and saying that fossil has to be eliminated in America, and they want to get rid of it, and thinking that's going to clean up the global climate, it won't clean it up all."
"If anything, it would be worse," Manchin said.
The science on climate change says otherwise. In a study published in Nature this week, researchers warn that fossil fuel producers should avoid extracting at least 90% of coal reserves and 60% of oil and gas reserves by 2050 in order to limit global temperature rise to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit.
Even then, the planet has a 50% chance of exceeding that level of warming. Earth has already warmed about 2 degrees Fahrenheit since the mid-1800s when the use of fossil fuels boomed with growing industrialization.
West Virginia is the second-largest U.S. coal producer and relies on fuel for 91% of its energy needs. The energy sector accounts for 6% of the state's employment, compared with a national average of roughly 2%.
As NPR has previously reported, the fastest way to cut U.S. emissions is likely through transforming the way the country generates electricity by moving away from fossil fuels, including coal and natural gas, toward renewable and zero-emissions sources.
On Wednesday, the Biden administration released a blueprint for generating 40% of the nation's power needs through solar by 2040, up from 3% today. Such a dramatic transition would require government action like the president's $3.5 trillion proposals.
BIDEN SEES ALLIES ON CLIMATE AMONG FAITH LEADERS
In the joint letter's conclusion, the religious leaders reiterate their plea to business and government leaders by quoting scripture: "To whom much is given, much is required."
Biden, a lifelong practising Catholic, has readily acknowledged the role religious leaders have played in spurring action on climate change.
In May, John Kerry, the administration's climate envoy, travelled to the Vatican to meet with Pope Francis, whom he called a "compelling moral authority on the subject of the climate crisis."
Kerry, who is also Catholic, said he hoped the pontiff's advocacy could "push people to greater ambition to get the job done."
Getting Biden's climate proposal done, though, will require the support of all 50 Democratic senators, including fellow Catholic Manchin.
Manchin's office did not respond to multiple inquiries by NPR asking for his reaction to the pope's call for climate action. One other Democratic senator, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, has also signalled that she will not support the package. Sinema is the only member of Congress to identify as "religiously unaffiliated."
