Notice of Death - Archbishop John Bathersby RIP

It is with great sadness that the Archdiocese of Brisbane announces the death of Emeritus Archbishop John Bathersby [Archbishop of Brisbane 1991- 2011] this morning at 7 am.

The Bishops of Queensland are meeting this week and they received news of his death prior to the beginning of Mass with the Holy Spirit Seminary Community.

Archbishop Bathersby was a long-serving and dedicated servant of the Church in Queensland and will be remembered for his emphasis on prayer, the Eucharist and the centrality of Jesus as well as a commitment to ecumenism and the laity.

This is a significant moment in the life of this local Church as we recall with gratitude the episcopal ministry of our sixth bishop. It is also a time of thanksgiving as now he is released from the debilitating illness that has been with him in these latter years.

Funeral Vigil Liturgy will be held at 5.00pm on Sunday 15 March, 2020, at The Cathedral of St Stephen, 277 Elizabeth Street, Brisbane.

Solemn Funeral Mass and Rite of Committal will be held at 11.00am on Monday 16 March, 2020, at the Cathedral of St Stephen.   Please note there will be no parking available at the precinct on the day.

Please commend to the prayers of your parishioners, Archbishop John, his family, and the Archdiocese at this sad time of loss.

May he rest in peace.
