PARISH NEWS UPDATE:

Last week, our Parish Priest, Fr. Peter was diagnosed with a heart condition that will require him to spend a month or so receiving prescribed treatment: complete rest and medication. He is in good spirits, but unfortunately he won't be able to celebrate any liturgies during this time. The parish will be ably administered by Fr. Paul and the parish pastoral team. Our hope is to be able to maintain our present parish services, but this will depend on the availability of supply priests.

Fr. Peter is very grateful for your prayers and good wishes and you will be kept informed of his recovery.

We congratulate the Welch, Sheehy, De Farias, Pugsley, Cronin and Meenin families whose children Delilah Florence, Oliver Jack, Isla Kate, Aurora Armani, Olivia Joan and Max Peter Dudley will be baptised in our Parish this weekend.

Please keep the Baptism families in your prayers as they begin their faith journey.

REST IN ETERNAL PEACE, JUSTIN KING

Beloved parishioner, Justin King, has passed away after bravely battling a sudden illness.  He has gone to the rest of his beloved God. Our prayers of gratitude are offered up to God for the gift that Justin will always be to his family, friends and parish community.

Justin was a friendly, generous, practical man of action and a wonderful presence in our community.  He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered.  Here he is surrounded by family members at the Opening of the Stella Maris Church in Broadbeach, towards which he generously donated. And also pictured with his beaming smile, surrounded by Bishops and Priests at the same Blessing and Opening of the Stella Maris Catholic Church, Friday 27th February 2015. May He Rest in Peace.

We received this message from Bishop Tim Harris of Townsville, former Parish Priest of Surfers Paradise:

I was saddened to hear of the death of Justin King. I have already said a Mass for the repose of his soul.

Justin's extraordinary generosity is well known. Many people have benefitted from it, as has the Catholic Church. The new Stella Maris Church would not have been possible without Justin's financial support. When I first spoke about the project to build a new Church, Justin was one of the first to respond. He said: "You must build this Church."  Well, Justin stood with me from the beginning to the end. He encouraged others to support the initiative, and he was instrumental in keeping the dream alive.

Justin believed that the Church was for the glory of God, and he was very proud of the achievement. Justin was a true believer, I admired him for his tenacity and faith. He loved Jesus and Mary His Mother, and his wish was for a Catholic Church that thrived in the world. Justin will be missed by all who knew him. He gave of himself without counting the cost, and he did that literally.

May he now enjoy the warm embrace of his God. May he Rest In Peace. Go forth, good and faithful servant.    +Tim Harris, Bishop of Townsville and former Parish Priest of Surfers Paradise.

This will be a lengthy task so we are unable to provide an exact starting date but we urge all parents and caregivers to continue to check our newsletter for updates.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION -

"If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve…As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."  Joshua 24:15

When we commit to serve the Lord, we must be willing to become a disciple in the work of the Lord.  A disciple is a person who spends time in prayer every day, joyfully participates in charitable works and generously supports their local parish and Church mission.  If we say we serve God, we must actually do something and not merely talk about it!

The vision of Stewardship speaks in every aspect of life, inviting everyone to be thankful, generous and accountable for what each has been given.

TAKE FIVE FOR FAITH -  READING THE LIVES OF THE SAINTS - INSPIRING!

Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross was born Edith Stein in 1891 and was killed at Auschwitz in 1942. She was a German Jewish philosopher who had been an atheist, although she had admired Christians she knew. She shocked everyone by becoming Catholic and, 11 years later, a Carmelite nun. Her conversion was prompted by an all-night reading of the autobiography of Saint Teresa of Ávila, a 16th-century Carmelite also of Jewish origins. Pick up a copy of the autobiographies of both these riveting saints—and see how they contribute to your own ongoing conversion.

(Matthew 17:22-27. "And they were overwhelmed with grief.")

  • SAINT ROSE OF LIMA -

    • "If only mortals would learn how great it is to possess divine grace, how beautiful, how noble, how precious. How many riches it hides within itself, how many joys and delights! No one would complain about his cross or about troubles that may happen to him, if he would come to know the scales on which they are weighed when they are distributed to men."

    • "Apart from the cross, there is no other ladder by which we may get to heaven."

    • "Nothing is far from God."

    • "Son, nothing in this world now affords me delight. I do not know what there is now for me to do or why I am still here, all my hopes in this world being now fulfilled." Saint Monica, on the conversion of Augustine.

    • St Monica received encouragement from St Ambrose, the local bishop, who told her that "God's time will come." He added, "Go now, I beg you; it is not possible that the son of so many tears should perish."

  • St Louis IX. King of France.

    • "I think more of the church where I was baptized than of Rheims Cathedral where I was crowned (as King of France).  It is a greater thing to be a child of God than to be the ruler of a Kingdom.

    • In order to deal justly and equitably with your subjects, be straightforward and firm, turning neither to the right hand nor to the left, but always following what is just, and upholding the cause of the poor till the truth be made clear.

    • Our clothing and our armour ought to be of such a kind that men of mature experience will not say that we have spent too much on them, nor younger men say we have spent too little.

    • In prosperity, give thanks to God with humility and fear lest by pride you abuse God's benefits and so offend him.

    • In order to avoid contention, never contradict anyone, except in case of sin or some danger to a neighbor; and when necessary to contradict others, and to oppose your opinion to theirs, do it with so much mildness and tact, as not to appear to do violence to their mind, for nothing is ever gained by taking up things with excessive warmth and hastiness.

  • St Joseph Calasanz (1557-1648)

    • "As Scripture says, "Those who instruct many in justice will shine as stars for all eternity." They will attain this more easily, if they make a covenant of perpetual obedience and strive to cling to Christ and please Him alone because, in His words, "What you did to one of the least of my brethren, you did to me."

    • "Moreover the strongest support is provided not only to protect the young from evil, but also to rouse them and attract them more easily and gently to the performance of good works. Like the twigs of plants, the young are easily influenced, as long as someone works to change their souls. But if they are allowed to grow a hardened heart, we know well that the possibility of one day bending them diminishes a great deal and is sometimes utterly lost."

THE GOSPEL THIS WEEKEND:  Trust in Our Lord, especially in trying times.

The readings this weekend remind us that God is faithful to us and that we should not let challenges stop us from trusting in God's care and protection. In the first reading, the people wisely choose to continue to trust in their God rather than chase after false idols. They REMEMBER the care and protection God gave them in the past and continue to trust in God. The psalm also reminds us that we should continue to sing of God's praises and God's gifts. God has made a covenant with us like a husband and wife make a covenant with each other in marriage. It is one of equality and looking out for the needs of the other because they are truly a part of each other. In the Gospel, Jesus challenges the people with his revolutionary teaching on the Eucharist. Some of his followers are horrified by it and turn away - refusing to follow him anymore. The Apostles, though, refuse to stop following him because they rightly say "where else could we go. YOU have the words of everlasting life." It is so important, especially in times of difficulty, challenge and change, that we all continue to remember the graces, give thanks for God's gifts and keep trusting in God's wisdom and guidance. For Jesus does indeed have the answers, even though he leads us through a new and often challenging territory.

In the first reading, the people are faced with a decisive question: Will you keep following the Lord, or will you go after other priorities and values and false gods. The response of the people is very telling: 'We have no intention of deserting the Lord our God who brought us and our ancestors out of the land of Egypt, the house of slavery, who worked those great wonders before our eyes and preserved us all along the way

This is yet another example of the people REMEMBERING. The people are calling to mind, in a very clear way, the blessings and graces of the past. If we DO NOT keep remembering the gifts of the past, we will almost certainly fall by the wayside. We MUST keep thanking God and remembering the countless blessings and graces that God has already given us along our life journey. Then, we too can say to the Lord, We have no intention of deserting the Lord who has done so much to support and accompany us along the way.

And this leads us to (as the psalm says) …. " bless the Lord at all times, his praise always on my lips"

The second reading is jarring and challenging to modern ears, but one line that makes sense of this all is this: "….for a man to love his wife is for him to love himself. A man never hates his own body, but he feeds it and looks after it, and that is the way Christ treats the Church because it is his body - and we are its living parts." This text of the second reading is meant to be understood as acknowledging the equality and dignity of man and woman and encouraging people to put each other first, the way one would treat one's own very self. !!!!

The Gospel affirms Jesus as the source of all inspiration and grace. In the midst of very challenging new concepts and ideas, that really challenge the would-be disciple and follower of Jesus, there is this simple reply: "Lord, who shall we go to? You have the message of eternal life, and we believe; we know that you are the Holy One of God.' This foundational belief in Jesus being our source of eternal life and of truth, allows us to keep trusting, keep believing and keep going deeper into our heart and soul so that we will truly follow Jesus even in times of challenge.

In this life, we must constantly be alert to keep our faith alive. This requires a daily decision to abide in the Word of the Lord, and to let that Word form us and to allow the Word to convert everything that is not consistent with the Lord's values. This means, prayer, spiritual reading, reflection on the scriptures and openness to the formation and challenges of Our Lord's words of eternal life, that challenge and impel us ever more forward, and often take us out of our comfort zones.

We walk humbly in the ways of our God (A)

In response to Our Lord's words in the gospel. "Many of Jesus' disciples said: 'This word is hard'. The Greek word used in the original text of this Gospel means 'the words of Jesus were hard to Accept, not hard to understand !!

The people listening to Jesus KNEW EXACTLY what Jesus MEANT by his speech, they were simply having a very difficult time accepting this message because it challenged them to the core. People stopped following Jesus NOT because they were having intellectual difficulty comprehending the meaning of his teaching, but rather, because he was challenging their lives and it was requiring a change of vision and action that they were simply not prepared to make. They refused to follow him because they found his message too called for them to change their thinking and behaviour and they didn't want to change.

That puts an interesting 'extra spin' on the reaction to Jesus. Our Lord KNEW that his teaching was quite challenging and difficult. That he was offering a new and unfamiliar way of looking at life and what is important. He was inviting anyone who chose to follow him to make a full, active and committed CHOICE, and not just happen to follow him around only because he cured people or miraculously provided them with bread on a few occasions. HIS word is spirit and life, but it is also the WAY OF THE CROSS, and requires a resolute transformation of heart and mind in order to follow him fully.

Jesus was clearly saying that unless you eat his body and blood in the Eucharist, you cannot have his life in you. Also, Jesus challenged those who were casually following him that they need to accept that he was THE full embodiment of the 'life of God' and he was asking those who followed him to accept this, and submit to him as the absolute authority of God. Some were not prepared to do that. Also, Jesus was saying that following him meant the highest standard of moral life, and of putting into action the values and practices of the Kingdom of God and making these values entirely part of them.

Jesus goes on to say something else really key, that puts a new perspective on our lives and actions. He says that "the life-giving power is 'Spirit' , the flesh gives no help. It is important to make a clear distinction here, though. Jesus was using words that indicate that he was NOT saying the BODY is bad and useless and that only spiritual things were good.  Quite the opposite. In fact, The Incarnation (God becoming flesh) and the Resurrection and The Ascension of the Lord bodily into heaven, shows us that the Body is sacred and holy and is intended to be glorified by God in Heaven. Jesus is saying that the flesh must be infused with the Spiritual values of the Kingdom and become both Spirit and Body united in Christ.

Naturally, there are many good things about society and our world today, but there are some strong values and philosophies around that are so dominant and so powerful in our society that if we were to accept them, it could make our lives really miserable. Some values in our world can send us down a path of futility.

The way the secular world assesses the value of the person.  The world that is stuck only in the flesh, puts too much importance on appearances. It does not understand the difference between DOING and Being. It does not take much to see that if you scratch the surface of modern society, there are some very worrying values in our society.  For example: there is a concerning attitude whereby a person says  'my value is in my job and without that job I am nothing."  This is not consistent with Jesus' message or actions.   Also, if one were to say, " y true value is all about my ability to be able to do certain things. If I cannot do these things anymore I have no value." .... That is also frighteningly misleading.  Christ has given each of us intrinsic value within ourselves, irrespective of our abilities. OR,..."my value is in what I own" or in "where I stand on the ladder of society....'  - If I lose all my possessions or lose my reputation or social standing, I am of no value."   Again - Jesus clearly shows that this is NOT where our true value lies at ALL.  Our value is in being eternally beloved sons and daughters of a loving God. But his words are too hard for many people and they stop following him.  Which is tragic, because although Christ's world view is challenging and new, it is freeing and very helpful especially when so many things we depend on fail us or cease to be possible.

Jesus, thank goodness, does not water down his teaching in order to keep those who are turning away. In fact, he steps up the strength of his message even more. He will not back down. And thankfully, he turns to his disciples and says... 'Are you going to leave too?" and St Peter, inspired by the Holy Spirit replies bravely and truthfully... "where else could we go... there is nowhere else to go....YOU have the words of everlasting life." YOU have the truth Lord, why would we turn away from true meaning.... no matter how challenging....

Lord, help us to keep following your ways, (even when it is most challenging), and help us to reject all that is contrary to your values..... May your life and your Gospel transform our hearts, minds and bodies and our lives.

POPE FRANCIS

"With the help of young people and their innovative spirit, we can make the dream come true of a world where bread, water, medicine and work flow abundantly and reach those most in need first."

"The external law cannot bring life because it does not change the heart. The radical newness of the Christian life is life according to the Holy Spirit who frees us from the law and at the same time brings it to fulfilment in the commandment of love." (GeneralAudience 12 Aug).

"God does not come in extraordinary events, but works amid the apparent monotony of our daily life, in the frequently dull rhythm of our activities, in the little things that, working with tenacity and humility, we achieve in our efforts to do his will."

"In the Gospel of John, Chapter 6, Jesus reveals Himself as the Bread of life. For He alone nourishes the soul, He alone makes us feel loved even if everyone else disappoints us, He alone gives us the strength to love and forgive in difficulties, He alone gives eternal life.

WEEKLY   Q

OH - what happened last week - we didn't change the Question - humble apologies!!  Why don't we give you two questions this week to make up for it - Question 4 and Question 5!

Weekly Trivia Q - the answer for which you will find in past Parish Newsletters which can be accessed via the website  Newsletter Archive – Surfers Paradise Parish

 - the first person to email the correct answer to pwkelly68@gmail.com   will have their name documented and at the end of the year the one with the most correct (first in) answers will win a 'surprise'!!

Question 4.    As is customary in the lead-up to the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, a number of ordination anniversaries occur.  At least four past and present priests are named in this list – can you name the four priests who celebrated their anniversary of priesthood at this time and who have served in the Surfers Paradise Catholic Parish within the last 35 years?

Question 5. 'How many times have we experienced storms in our lives and thought that the Lord was asleep, that God was not concerned, that God was simply ignoring us?'  Who penned these words and what was the date of the Newsletter in which they are found?

ANSWER to Question 3.  (Several parents of grown-up children are upset at the fact our children no longer go to Mass.  "I'd rather my children went to Mass while I am alive, rather than making a big show of things after I've gone.".  Who was the person who said this?)

ANSWER  16 May 2021 THE PASTOR'S POST: Final Orders

Commitment To Child And Vulnerable Adult Safety

"The Archdiocese of Brisbane holds that children and vulnerable adults are a gift from God with an intrinsic right to dignity of life, respect and security from physical and emotional harm. They are to be treasured, nurtured and protected from any harm."  As a Parish Community, we pray for a change of heart, that we respond to our grief by reaching out to one another in truth and love.

Acknowledgement of Country - This is Kombumerri Country - The Traditional Custodians of this region.

We respectfully acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the First People of this country. We pay our respects to the Kombumerri people, who are the traditional custodians of the land, waterways and seas upon which we live, work and socialise throughout this Catholic Parish of Surfers Paradise. We acknowledge Elders, past and present and emerging, as they hold the memories, traditions, culture and hopes of our Indigenous people. We pay tribute to those who have contributed in many ways to the life of the community. We affirm our commitment to justice,  healing, and reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.
